Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Hannah HODGE
« on: Sunday 10 May 09 16:07 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone could see if they could find Hannah Hodge on the 1861 and 1871 census.

She was born 1856 in Sheffield, but I do not know her parents' names. (That's what I'm hoping to find out). She has been a brick wall of mine for so many years and I have just found out her maiden name (I hope!)
Any help anyone could shed, would be very welcome

Regards,
Gill

Yorkshire (West Riding) / EUREKA!!!! Smith found!!!
« on: Tuesday 14 April 09 10:38 BST (UK)  »
I just had to share my joy/relief with someone.

My great grandfather was John Smith married to Hannah and I have tried in vain to discover Hannah's maiden name ever since I started tracing my family tree (quite some time!) and today I have got it!!!!!

I started looking for marriages; but a John Smith married to a Hannah somewhere in West Yorkshire, somewhere between certain years wasn't really a do-able task. I did send for a few likely certificates, but was unsuccessful. The only saving grace was that he was a saddler and not a labourer!
I tried looking for likely references for birth certificates of their children, but the net was too wide. It is something I return to every now and then, over the years.

But last week I managed to narrow down their youngest son's birth record to 3 or 4 possiblities and sent off for the search. EUREKA I've got it today.

All the possible names I had after looking at probable marriages are wrong! So I'll have to start from stratch. It's great to have something to get my teeth into again; a whole new line to find. Only frustrating because I will be away from a computer for a few weeks, so I'll have to wait. But never mind.

So I now know John Smith married Hannah HODGE around the Huddersfield/Cleckheaton/Sheffield area, probably between 1871 and 1878!!
Not the most unusual names to get excited about, but at least it's not Smith.

Gill

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / 1871 Look up HAYES
« on: Monday 06 April 09 15:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I wonder if someone, who has access to the 1871 census for Glanford Brigg, Lincs, would do a look up for me.

I believe Mary A Hayes aged 70 was living in the Glanford Brigg area, and I would love to know who was in the same household with her. (Emma Uffindell I hope, but any one else?)

Thank you
Gill

« on: Sunday 19 October 08 18:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I wonder if anyone has access to the parish records of TUXFORD, notts.

I Am looking for the birth of Daniel ALMEY (Alma on the 1861 census!) He was born c1807. I am hoping to get details about his parents and maybe siblings.

I have him on the 1861/71/81 censuses, but wonder if anyone could find him on earlier ones. That could give me more information about his family.

Thank you
Gill

Nottinghamshire / SPYBY - parish records
« on: Sunday 19 October 08 18:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help find a birth and marriage for my ancestor.

I am looking for details for Joseph SPYBY (Spiby).

I believe he was born in Nottinghamshire about 1800 and probably married his wife Elizabeth ? in Notts.

His eldest son, Joseph was born in Nottingham c. 1826 (according to the 1971 census) that's the only reason for my asumption that Nottingham was were they were married.

According to the births of his children, he and Elizabeth moved to Gainsborough, Lincs then Hull, Yorks.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thank You

Gill

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / No record of birth!! ASSERT
« on: Monday 06 October 08 10:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
Can anyone explain why I have not been able to find details of the birth of my great aunt. Would it have been possible for her just not to have been registered?
She existed!! I even have the original death certificate, but I have been trying to track down her birth for ages. Now having access to the birth records, I have trailled through looking in vain for her.
She was Louie ASSERT. Her death certificate gives her dob as 24 Nov 1886. Not sure where my mum got that, as she hadn't seen her for years. The 1891 census gives her as being 4yrs and born in Hull (they were in Winterton, Lincs at the time, her mother Hana now being with her new husband Frederick Frow). I am 99.9% certain she was born in Hull.
Her brother Alfred was born 1876 (in London were they were then living). Her sister Rosanna was born 1879 (in Hull were they came, presumably as their grandparents were there). There seems a big gap before Louie was born in 1886! Incidently, I also cannot find any trace of her father's death! He was Adolf Assert. Maybe he disappeared. Or would there be a separate record for registering German nationals? I am just wondering whether Louie's mum was actually with her husband when Louie was born.  She married again in 1889 to my grandmother's father. But as Louie took the FROW surname in the 1891 census why should she revert back to Assert if he was not her father?  And I have not been able to find ANY trace of her in the 1901 census. (She died in Leeds. Why she was there I have no idea, as there appears to be no relatives. If I could find her somewhere it would be great)
It 's as if she didn't exist. I just love to find out more about her.
Sorry 'bout being a bit long winded! Just thought, the more information I give, the bigger the slight chance someone might know something!
Regards, Gill

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / address lookup Hull 1871/ 1861
« on: Monday 06 October 08 09:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
Is it possible to find out who lived next door to someone without having a name?
I have Conrad EHLERS living at 7 Hope St, Hull in 1871. He was the informantant on the death certificate of an ancestor living at 6 Hope Street. She was Freiderike GIESLER who died in 1869. But I would like to try and find out who she was living with. Maybe they were still there in 1871 or were there in 1861.
I would be grateful of any help.
Thank You
Gill

Hello,
Please can anyone help me find my family on the above 2 censuses?

I have Robert FARNELL on the 1861 census living in Sutton-on-Hull with his family.
(Robert Farnell - 33 - ag labourer - born Gilling, N Yorks - Transcribed on 'find my past' as Furnell)

But where was he before that? I can't seem to find him anywhere! He was married in Hull in 1852, but he doesn't appear to be around Hull or North Yorks.

I was also hoping to track down his father, but again with no luck. He was Elias FARNELL. He was married in Bishop Wilton, Yorks in 1814, but not sure of his actual dob. His children were all born in Gilling, nr Helmsley, N Yorks. Just wondered if he was around for the 1841 census.

Thank you in anticipation

Gill
