Not sure if this is the correct place to post this - I suppose I'm after technical help. But here goes.

I store all my information on the Personal Ancestral File (PAF) program provided by Family Search, the Morman site. As I have a good few years work, I always back up my work regularly, on disc and memory stick, as well as the hard drive.  A few months ago I was horrified to discover I could not open the files on my computer (it had been giving us other problems). After reinstalling the PAF files, all has been well. Yesterday I downloaded my up-to-date  file on to my memory stick. When I tried to open it, it could not be opened. I tried downloding onto disc; again it could not be opened from the disc. The program could still be opened directly from my computer. However, trying this morning, I cannot get the file to open from the computer!! Can someone explain to me what might be going wrong.

Thank You,
Gill

England / Death Certificate information
« on: Friday 02 May 08 13:49 BST (UK)  »
Can someone please clear up something that has puzzled me for a while?
After cause of death, on a death certificate, there is usually a time in months or years. Is this the length of time that person has been ill, or does it have some other meaning?
I thought it was the former, but some of mine do not seem logical.
Also, having just received the death certificate of my great grandmother, I was surprized to see cancer of the womb as the cause of death, in 1900. Not sure why, but I wasn't expecting cancer to be a named cause of death over 100 years ago. Just when was the term first used, does anyone know.

Thank You,
Gill

Can anyone tell me , is there somewher I can look up the passenger lists of passengers travelling from Australia to UK.
I have just discovered  one of my ancestors travelled to Australia on two occasions, (1949 & 1951) so he must have returned at some point in between!! I'd love to know when.

Thank You,
Gill

(not sure what happened to my last post on the subject?)

Australia Lookups completed / WHITELEY Adelaide/Jamestown BMD
« on: Thursday 20 March 08 12:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I am looking for my mum's cousins who emigrated to Adelaide in the 1950s.
I have found them on the passenger lists and have their mother's death details, but I am looking for marriage details, in paticular. Can they be searched for anywhere?

The family were:-
Annie Elizabeth WHITELEY (b. 1894 Hull) - sailed into Adelaide 1856 and died in Jamestown in 1985.
Daughter Jean (b.1933) sailed with her.
Daughter June (b. 1834) and son Malcolm (b. 1937) sailed into Adelaide 1955. Her son from a previous marriage (Dougla LONG b. 1923) had emigrated in 1949, but to Brisbane, I believe.

Obviously if Jean & June married, they would no longer be WHITELEYs, so I would like to track down any records I can. Also for Maolcolm.

Any help gratefully received.
Thank You
Gill

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Sculcoates Workhouse Infirmary
« on: Wednesday 23 January 08 11:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, Does anyone know aything about the Sculcoates Workhouse Infirmary? My GG grandmother died there in 1915. Was there still a workhouse or was it just an infirmary? Her death certificate gave her address, so I don't think she was actually in the workhouse.
Just wondered why she would be in a workhouse hospital and not an ordinary one.

Thanks
Gill

Occupation Interests / WatchMan
« on: Wednesday 23 January 08 11:08 GMT (UK)  »
Is there any other interpretation of watchman other than the security guide type.
My gg grandfather's death certificate gives him as 'Corporation Watchman'; he was 92 when he died. He must have taken the job on relatively late as he was still  trading as a shopkeeper when at least 85 years old. Think he might be a bit frail to have been any good!!

(Shouldn't have said that, I suppose. Very ageist) Sorry.

Regards, Gill

Would it be possible for someone to see who lived at 6 Victoria Gardens, Beconsfield Street in Hull in 1901.  I was looking for the MEINECKE family, but could be a relative.

Thank You

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1851 Bradford lookup MAUD
« on: Thursday 20 December 07 15:36 GMT (UK)  »
I'm still keeping my fingers tightly crossed, but I may  have started to make a crack in one of my brick walls!! Maybe someone out there can help.

I am looking for an elusive Samuel MAUD born c. 1829. I havehim on the 1861 census onwards, but his age and place of birth change slightly ( 1861 - age 27 b. Lancaster. 1871 - aged 41 b. Hull. 1881 - aged 52 b. Halifax). He was living in Hull for all these census with wife, Sarah and family.

His marriage certificate gives his fathers name as Samuel also. I had been unable to trace any Samuel prior to this that had a father Samuel. But have just discovered one the 1841 census. Could it be mine(?)
The family are living in the Manningham district of Bradford.
The family consist of:-
Samuel MAUD - 45 - Wool Sorter (marriage cert 20 yrs later gives occupation as just labourer )
Jane - 43
John - 22
James - 20
Middleton - 18
Sarah - 15
Craven - 12
Samuel - 10
Jane - 7
Eliza - 4
Amelia - 11mths

If I could find them  on the 1851 census, it just might(?) throw some light on things.

Can anyone do a look up for me?

Thank you
Gill

Europe / German pronunciation please
« on: Sunday 16 December 07 20:03 GMT (UK)  »
I have searched in vain for a number of years for records of my great aunt Louie.
I have her on the 1891 census, but she has taken the name of her step father. I cannot find her anywhere else - no birth or death records (even though I have her original death certificate!)
I really want to find her birth certificate. She was born in 1886 to German parents Adolf and Johanne (Hanna) ASSERT. (Probably in Hull, but not definate)

I was wondering how the name Assert would be pronounced in German. Maybe it has been transcribed in a totally different way.
Any help gratefully received.
Thanks
Gill
