The Common Room / Missing Fathers!!
« on: Saturday 27 November 04 14:15 GMT (UK) »
I have the exact same problem with two of my ancestors on different sides.
On their marriage certificates, their fathers name and occupation were given. But after intensive search by myself (and others), no trace of the fathers can be found whatsoever.
On obtaining their birth certificates, I found there was no father mentioned.
There is a possibility,I suppose that their father died before they were born - both were stated as dead on the marriage certificates. But more likely, they were born illigitamately (One certainly was, I have the parish records)
What I am wondering, is, are they likely to have 'made up' a father for the records? Has anyone else another suggestion?
On the birth certs, the mothers surname matches that of the child. On the marriage certs, the fathers surname is the same!!
