Hi Guys
Military Service

The Record of Service for 14th July 1916 shows that George Augustus served previously in the 86th Batt Royal Irish Rifles for 12 years and the Middlesex Regiment for 200 days. The George Whitecoat identified as being George Augustus gives the following

Attested date 1894 - therefore plus nearly 13 years means that when he was married in 1902 he would have been still serving. His Marriage Record shows that he was a ‘General Dealer’ at this time. If those figures are correct he would have been serving until 1907.

Date of birth – Using his attested date of 1894 and for round figures using 20 years old gives DOB 1874. His Marriage Record age (26) gives his DOB as 1876. Where his age on the 1911 Census is give as 36yrs  DOB 1875. The record of his enlistment in 1916 shows his age as 39yrs 11 months so say 40 years so DOB 1876. So all in all about the same.

So I guess the question is did he really serve for 13 years? or was it more like 6,7 or 8 to match up with his Marriage record. Or is it possible that he was not 19 years old at his attested date but rather 13 or 14 years.

I have yet to digest the latest information regarding Augustus being Augusta

Hi Guys

Wow - there's a ton of stuff to work through a lot I did not know. I think that the Huntsworth Terrace address may hold a connection being as George Augustus and Ada used this address on their Marriage Record (1902) and only a year later than the 1901 census showing Henry Powell who would have been to young to be Ada's Father, but perhaps her Brother.

The investigation continues - as well as the mystery of the made up name 'Whitecoat'

Thank you all for your assistance.

Hi
Yes, I noticed that as well. I tried to do some research on both those but could not locate any information. I thought Susannah may have been his mother. Again another dead end.

Hi
Heywood and Ladyhawk

Thanks for the info some of it I had found. One of the things that puzzled me also was where were the children at the time of the 1911 Census? I'm not sure about the Royal Artillery, although I have read that he was in the Middlesex Regiment for 200 days or so it appears after his service in the Rifles and before he was married in 1902.

I could not find any other Census Records that contain any details. Of course it doesn't help that it's perhaps George and then Augustus.

If I could find his baptism record - that would confirm his mother and fathers names. To me it's a bit of a co-incidence that on his marriage record  his Father is recorded as Henry and also Ada's Father is also recorded as Henry, of course this may be so. I also done some research on Ada and I'm yet to be convinced that this is her correct name.

Still onward and upwards as they say.
Thanks once again

Hi
I wonder if somebody can help please. I’m trying to find a baptism record for George Augustus Thomas who lived in the Marylebone area. Just to confuse things it seems he liked to call himself Augustus Thomas. This will confirm his parents’ names and also his birthplace.
I can locate marriage record in 1902 where George married Ada Powell. The marriage record shows his age as 26 years old and his Father is shown as Henry Thomas. George’s DOB would then be 1876ish.
At some stage according to his enlistment for WW1 he previously spent 12 years in the 86th Batt Royal Irish Rifles. I can also find them both (George and Ada (where he is calling himself Augustus)) on the 1911 census. Here it indicates that he was born in Marylebone. I cannot find him on any other census records.
Hoping you can help

Hi Alan

Many thanks for the reply and the welcome greetings.

It was my mistake I also found the Oddington record however in my notes I used 1745 instead of 1748.

I need to somehow connect that record with the Bicester/Stratton Audley Hawkins. Or is there a another record for John Hawkins lurking about somewhere?

Hi
I wonder if anybody can help me please. I’m trying to locate the Baptism Record for John Hawkins born around 1745 who I believe was born in Oxfordshire. John was married to Mary Cartwright in 1773 in Bicester.
I have located his Son also John Hawkins (1786-1867), he appears to have been born in Stratton Audley.
I have found a baptism record for John(1745) for Oddington, near Charlton on Otmoor which is relatively local and one for Northmoor which is the other side of Witney, in my view not so likely.
However, I cannot pin down the Oddington connection or progress further without more details for John(1745) his baptism record will also confirm his parents.
Thanks
Regards to All
