The Common Room / Strange registration
« on: Monday 12 April 21 16:38 BST (UK)  »
Thomas Kedge's first Sophia, wife died in January 1838 her burial record says she was 48 and a possible baptism for her was on 4 Jul 1791  then from the censuses
1841
Thomas KEDGE  50
Sarah  15
Louisa  8
/ Elizabeth BARNETT  30
Mary Ann  2
Elizabeth  4 m

1851
Thomas KEDGE 63
Elizabeth Wife  Mar  42
Mary A   Daur  12
Elizabeth  Daur  10
Emily  Daur   8
George  Son  6

Mary Ann and Elizabeth look like they are on both censuses  in 1841 as Barnett and in 1851 as Kedge
which looks like they were children of Elizabeth Barnett who has now "married " Thomas Kedge BUT
no such marriage has been found and there is this odd anomaly
The GRO Index for the children born after registration
Kedge Mary Ann no mother's name March qtr 1839
Kedge Elizabeth no mother's name March qtr 1841
Kedge Emily mother Barnett Dec qtr1843
Kedge George mother Barnett Sep qtr1846

No baptisms have been found for Sarah and Louise. But Sophia would have been 43 at the birth of Louisa

What I find so odd is the children with out a mother's name usually indicates base child of a mother withher surname but in this case it looks like they have the father's name and the mother is not listed. Can anyone suggest what the real story is please.

Norfolk / Could Gaskin be John?
« on: Wednesday 31 March 21 17:25 BST (UK)  »
Please can anyone shed some light on this strange two part situation?
1. Elizabeth Mann married Robert Stevenson Ford 26 Feb 1883 in Chelsea she gave her father as John Mann a Carman
Harriet Mann married George Baker  26 Jul 1891 St Andrew, West Kensington, she gave her father as John Mann a Carman and the witnesses were R.S.Ford and E Ford
I conclude from this that Elizabeth and Harriett were sisters.
In 1891 Martha Mann is mother-in law to George Baker so from this I think John Mann was married to Marhta and they were the parents of the girls continuing the same lines in 1881 John 7 Martha are in Kensington and have a 20 year old daughter Hannah with them
Hannah born 1861,Elizabeth born 1864 Harriet born 1867 all born in Norfolk and marrying in London
But then here's the FIRST MYSTERY
1871 We find Martha with Hannah 11, Betsy 6 ,Harriet 5,and Blanch 3 all born Hardingham Norfolk in Chelsea BUT the head of the household is Gaskin not John.
The last three all have mother MEALE but I can not find Hannah's registration
In 1864 Gascoigne Mann married Martha Male in Hardingham
Hannah would be born before that marriage

Question 1 is is it possible that Gaskin was John?
Question 2 who weree Hannah's parents?

Somerset / how did Elizabeth Flower Veal relate to Martha Veal?
« on: Tuesday 16 February 21 14:10 GMT (UK)  »
On the 1841census Thomas and Ann Carpenter have with them Edith, Martha, Mary and Elizabeth(AGE 6)Veal. I have found baptisms for all these girls the first three are daughters of Thomas and Ann or Nancy Veal  Thomas died in 1828 and Ann Veal married Thomas Carpenter 16 Jul 1833
But the baptism for Elizabeth Veal was 19 Oct 1834 Elizabeth Flower daughter of Ann Veal single woman.
Ann(Nancy) was the daughter of Thomas  Higgins and Hester(nee Flower)
Can anyone give any suggestions as to what the situation was please? Thomas and Ann VEAL married in 1818 first child Edith bap 1820
My fist thoughts were that Elizabeth was a grand daughter but Thomas and Ann Veal's Ann was not old enough to be a mother and strangely was not on that 1841 census.(daughters Ann and Mary were baptised together in 1828)

Carmarthenshire / JONES= JOHN?? Jane=Harriet??
« on: Sunday 29 November 20 12:25 GMT (UK)  »
Oh dear the Welsh part of the tree is not easy :(

William Davies married Elizabeth Jones 16 May 1855 Michaelstone super Avon, Glamorgan
That is certain but after that!!! Both William and Elizabeth are problems but I am trying to sort Elizabeth out first.
Known facts:
Her gather on the marriage certificate was Evan Jones a labourer.
1 from the censuses after their marriage her birth place and age is given as follows
61  32 fromLlanfyangleabercowyn,           next to St Clares
71 42 from Caermarthenshire Langynog        next to St Clares
81 50 fro St Clares,

I have a hand written "Tree" compiled from a conversation a Canadian "cousin" had with his grand mother in the 1980s giving Elizabeth born in the parish of Langynog 22 Jul 1829

F M P has an entry in the Ebenezer Particular Baptist Chapel Llangynock for an Elizabeth born 22 Jul 1829 parents Evan and Jane JOHN

I have not found Elizabeth in 1841 or 1851 as either Jones or John.

Is it possible that is the one at Ebenezer? Can anyone helpto find Elizabeth in 1841 or 1851 Please.

Next  also at Ebenezer are John born 20 day of December  1831 and Rachel registered 15 Mar 1834 to the same parents and in 1841 Piece: 1382 Book: 20 Folio: 6 Page Number: 3 Llangunnock there is an Evan John with with John age 10 and Rachel age 7 but his wife appearsto be Harriet ! I think the same family are on the 1851 census Piece: 2472 Folio: 610
Page Number: 17
I can not find a burial for Jane or a marriage for Evan and Harriet, is it possible Jane changed her name to Harriet?

I would be grateful for any ideas on these problems , thank you

Ireland / Finding a marriage
« on: Monday 02 November 20 10:23 GMT (UK)  »
Help this is a long shot
I know John Needle served with 14th Dragoons in Ireland from 1815 - 1819.
He has been identified moving between Monaghan, Dundalk and  Portobelo Barracks Dublin during that time. He returned to England about June 1819.
He had a daughter baptised in 1820 in Richmond giving his wife as Bridget on later occasions she was Elizabeth born 1793 in Londonderry
Can anyone suggest how I can find their marriage and so her surname?
I did look in the military marriages in Kew back in 2008 but only for John and Elizabeth not Bridget
I will be grateful for any clues where to look
Thank you

The Common Room / Could Bridget= Elizabeth??
« on: Saturday 31 October 20 13:06 GMT (UK)  »
Help I have had a brick wall for many years with my 3x Great grandmother and am holding my breath in case I have made a possible break through today. Please help to either confirm my suspicions or conclusively squash the notion.

John Needle was a soldier from Tadmarton in Oxfordshire. He served in Ireland and I believe married there but have not found the marriage.
He died in Tadmarton in 1832
His military papers say he was injured while serving in Richmond in October 1820
His widow is on the 1841 census with 4 daughters, the oldest being Elizabeth born out of county btw 1816 and 1821

There is a Baptism in  Richmond
1016 8 Oct born 5 Sept 1821
Elizth. John & Bridget Needle  Hill Soldier S Langston

and a marriage in Warwick in 1840
Nov 15
John JONES of full age Bachelor Tinman Cape John Jones Farmer
Elizabeth NEEDLE of full age Spinster Cape John Needle Labourer

In 1851 Mrs Elizabeth Jones was born in Tadmarton Oxon
on all later censuses she was born in Richmond

Now comes the problems:
1 she was with her mother in 1841 was it a mistake to give here surname as Needle (ancestry has mistranscribed it "Newbell")
2 where was John Jones in 1841

The Baptism shows John and Bridget is it possible that Elizabeth was really Bridget? is that why I have failed to find a marriage? Or is all this a red herring and there is a second family  involved?
Your thoughts please
Many thanks
