Family History Beginners Board / Falkland Island
« on: Tuesday 17 October 06 18:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I was wondering if anyone could possibly help me.

My Cousins father wants to research his family history.

He knows that his Grandfather was a Leslie John Johnson born 1904 Hill Cove, Falkland Islands.
The fathers name is Edward Johnson, mothers name Elizabeth (nee White) born in Watergore, Somerset.

He would like to obtain a copy of Leslie's birth certificate & feels it maybe registered in Port Stanley, & also details of Edward ie: his date of birth, along with parents names.

As he is not on the internet, is there any way he could send of for the above information or is there a website that I may be able to research the information for him.

Thank you for your time

Maria

Found this thread amusing & interesting  ;D
I started as my maiden name is Guppy & my mothers maternal grandmothers maiden name was Guppy aswell, I was hoping to find a link, but alas have got back as far as early 1800's with no connection yet!

Also my paternal Grandfather's legend was that our surname should have been 'Baker' & not Guppy, due to his ?X grandfather murdering a vicar & being hung~therefore the wife reverted back to her maiden name to protect the identity of the children!
Have since found out that my 3X great grandfather Charles Baker, who actually murdered a policeman, it transpires he was out poaching along with a couple of other fellows & they were caught by 2 bobbies & proceeded to beat them up. Unfortunately one died from his injuries. Charles was caught & served 25 years in jail. His wife did not revert back to her maiden name, its just that my 2X great grandfather was their eldest son & born out of wedlock!! His name was Charles Baker Guppy!!  :o

The gang show leader Ralph Reader is supposed to be my paternal grandmothers cousin, though I cannot find the connection!! ???

When I asked my maternal grandfather about his grandparents, he was most helpful, but it transpired that the 'lady' who he called 'Grannie' was indeed his father's older sister (but not old enough to be his fathers mother). When I pointed this out to him.........lets say he was none too pleased & is convinced my findings are incorrect!!  :-[ When I did find his 'real' grandparents, his real Grannie was still alive when my Grandfather was 14years old~so now intrigued as to what happened!! ;)
Haven't the heart to tell him that as maternal grandmother was born out of wedlock!

Also surprised at the amount of children born out of wedlock!
Well that would never happen in my day  ;D ;D

For Sale / Wanted / Events / Re: British Isles Vital Records
« on: Saturday 21 May 05 00:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I purchased mine(vital records index edition 2) directly from the LDS Birmingham
tel no:0121 785 2200

in feb of this year  cost me £22.95 & theres no extra charge for P & P :D when you ring them ask them for a product list too  ;)

Will warn you that there maybe 10.4 million birth & christening records & 1.9 million marriage records, but by all means it doesn't cover every area.  But well worth the money & a darn site cheaper then the previously mentioned auction site!!

Hi Donna
Regards to Emma Rose Knight, she's not in my tree, but most of my cousin Knights I have not researched any time post 1881, so if theres a  chance you could find her parents there may be a connection, as my 2nd Great Grandfather had 10 siblings who would fit the time scale, but as of yet I have been unable to bring their lines past 1881.
I did check the ~BVRI & can find no baptism, of Emma Rose.

Regards to the Hodders, most of mine originate from Uplyme, Devon, I do have a William Hodder marrying a Margaret Fowler 1794 in Whitchurch.

sorry I couldn't have been of any more use  ???
