Dublin / Re: 50 Middle Abbey Road Dublin

I found a roundabout way to look at one of the online copies.
50  Middle Abbey Street 1932 lists Miss M. Cruice, St. Patrick's Guild.

More on her: http://www.adoptionrightsalliance.com/spg.htm

It's more likely Middle Abbey Street. It's in the city centre, off O'Connell Street.
An email to the nice folks upstairs in Pearse street library will often get a response.

They have a huge collection of Thom's directories.

Irish Language / Re: TRANSLATING A REFERENCE TO SEAMUS O CATHASAIGH
« on: Friday 19 May 17 22:50 BST (UK)  »
Ó CATHASAIGH, Séamus ( c.1864–1919)   Cuid a haon.  Part 1. Literal translation. No time to convert to 'proper English'

Caitlín  lived at 76 ??? Lake Street, The Briars/Brambles????.

loch in 76 Sráid loch, na Driseoige, is probably Íocht.
I believe it should translate as Lower Dorset St. Your guess is as good as mine where they got Driseoige from.

The two most likely (i.e. closest) parishes are St. Agatha's, North William Street, Dublin 1 and St. Laurence O'Toole's, Seville place, Dublin 1.
Records from both of them are online at http://www.nli.ie but only go as far as 1881. Both parishes are still in operation.
A nice letter with a small donation to both churches might elicit a photocopy of the records.

Ireland / Re: Pronunciation of surname Ruane

Can confirm Roo-ann as the pronunciation here.

Given the shape of the first letter and that of 'Labourer', I think it's Lester.

Had I just seen the surname, I would have guessed Coster, but the first letter is very similar to that written in labourer.

If it's Dublin, the Lying-in hospital is the Rotunda. Still in business, the oldest maternity hospital in the world.

**edit, oops I see your McAuleys are Antrim. The Belfast Lying-in Hospital became part of what is now the Royal Maternity Hospital in 1903.

Charlotte 25 Oct 1852 - Larceny, one month.

Frederick 6 Jan 1846 - Larceny, 'No Bill' (I don't know what that means, but others have 'Not guilty' written beside them. He is not the only one with 'No bill'.)

Frederick 31 Dec 1850 - Larceny, 8 months.
