Also, when scanning, scan at the highest dpi setting you can.
It can result in very big files, but can also draw out detail in backgrounds etc..

It reminds me of the raised impression you often find on degrees and diplomas etc..

I have seen similar on old postcards, which could be coloured in, though none quite as intricate as the one in the photo.

You're always better work backwards than forwards.
Start with what you know - names of children etc., land holdings, if any, and try and make the link.
