Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: Please and Barton, please and thank you.

Glad it was he was of interest. George was dead by the time I was born, but she always referred to her husband as Mr Please, never 'my husband' in conversation.
I don't know whether she was 'employed' to look after him after he was widowed, and things 'went from there', but there was a considerable age difference as you will have noticed. She never remarried.
You can imagine when I first went searching, how confusing to find to wives with the same name.

It's a rather remote connection really, by marriage. I was interested in this side of the family as I had only childhood memories of a few relatives, my paternal grandparents, my grandma's sister Elizabeth Sarah Barton, the second wife of George Jacobs Please (1881-1960) and my grandma's brother in law, Matthew James Brownfield (1879-1957). I left England in 1949. My Aunt Elizabeth had no children of her own.
George Jacobs Please had been previously married to Elizabeth Mary Barton(1857-1935), known in the family as Lizzie. Lizzie was Elizabeth Sarah's aunt.
This is all I have found out about them. I hope you find it useful.

Thank you Carolyn.
I have been particlarly interested in the backdrop.
I have been told that the chevrons on the lower sleeve denote overseas service and that the backdrop is possibly Salonika, or Egypt and that it is likely that this was taken in 1918 prior to their return to England from Egypt, having previously been at Gallipoli. there is also a suggestion that the flag, top right, could be a Greek flag. It is certainly a photographers backdrop, but the real ground is rocky, so is certainly not taken in England.

Thank you all so much for the great work. What a thrill to see Grandad looking so good.
As usual, instead of the original one scrappy picture, I end up with having to choose, and ultimately, I keep all of them!

I realise that this might be too much of a challenge given the poor quality of the left side, but perhap a partial restoration with just Grandad, would be possible.
I know he was at Gallipoli and Egypt, so would love him to look a bit more respendant.
Many thanks,

World War Two / Re: What is Mary wearing?
« on: Tuesday 05 March 13 22:35 GMT (UK)  »
Just when I was seriously thinking about bicycle pump, up comes another more viable thought.
I had been looking at old biciycle pumps on line and although they are very similar, they seem to be a lot shorter than the one Mary is holding and the nozzle bit seems different. The water spray idea is much more in keeping with the uniform.
My thanks to you both for your suggestions. It does point to Mary wearing the uniform in her own right, rather than 'dressing up' in part of her daughter's.

Wearing her daughter's greatcoat is a possibility, but it wouldn't explain the totally different headwear. The badges are not even similar. The other thing is that Mary appears younger than other photos of her in 1939/40 (she died in 1942), so maybe it was earlier than the known 1939 of Ivy's picture.
I have contacted the Fire Service to see if they can tell me about the date of use of the hat badge. Will probably have to wait a while for the answer.
Thank you all for the Fire Service clue, I would never had thought of that myself.
