My maternal GGrandfather came to London from Nassau (Germany)before his marriage at St Boniface German Catholic Church, 25th Oct 1868. He was a sugar baker then and presumably worked in one of the sugar factories in St George in the East. He was variously recorded as Gustave Vonderfelten, von der Velden, van der Velden, van den Delden. His father was Henri Vondefelten on the 1868 marriage certificate.
I have struck a real brickwall as I don't know how to locate where in Nassau he could have migrated from. As there were many sugar makers from Germany at this time, there may have been some definite plan for migration to this area of London in particular. (I have checked the sugar baker site online, but that doesn't help with point of origin. Does anyone have any suggestions at all?
My GGrandmother married my GGrandfather after arriving in London in 1868, (Neither was there in 1861 it seems) it is possible that they knew each other in Nassau. Her father Johannes Kirschei and father's mother, Magdalena Hering, were also shown as born in Neustadt. Her grandfather was born in Hehne (also shows Hohne with an umlaut). Her mother Elisabeth Hommel and both Elisabeth's parents are shown as being born in Ailertchen. So maybe that might be another clue.
I do have information for them both, and their 11 children in census and other certificates after 1968, but would love to find more about his German background.
Any advice would be most appreciated
