London and Middlesex / Jane Pearce/Bennett Islington
« on: Monday 05 October 20 20:39 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me find what happened to my Grt Grt Grandma's eldest sister? Jane Pearce was born in 1940 in Wigston (Two Steeples), Leicestershire. She is the eldest of 11 children of Sawyer/Woodman Henry Pearce and wife Eliza Goodwin. I have lots of information and even photographs of all the other children and their spouses and families but Jane remains a mystery. I can trace her in the 41, 51 and 61 census and then she goes off the radar. I had previously assumed she had died between the 61 and 71 census as I couldn't find a suitable marriage but had found a possible death entry. Every now and again as more archives have come online I have had another dabble and last night I found a marriage that I can say is 100% her. She married Benjamin Bennett on September 8th 1862 in Islington. I know it is her as one of the witnesses is one of her her sisters husbands; Josiah Monk and the address given is my Pearce family's address from the 1861 census (12, Cottenham Road, Islington). I thought I had cracked it with this new info, but now I can not find them going forward. I even tried to find Benjamin before the marriage but have had little success as I don't know where he was born. Benjamin's father is given as Giles Bennett, Rope maker (which I kind of imagined would make the Bennetts a family from a coastal location?) and Benjamin is 20 years of age in 1862. Can anyone locate them anywhere as a family after 1862? It is possible they emigrated, several of the other Pearce girls went to Canada but not until 1908 and my Canadian contacts don't have any knowledge of Jane either. Any help would be very very much appreciated.  ;D

This family then looks interesting (albeit the older boys’ ages a bit out).

1841 census: Wells St, Marylebone

William Heywood 25 Tailor j N
Mary do 25 N
Edward do 6
Charles do 4
William do 2/2 months [not clear whether it’s intended to say 2yrs 2 months or just 2 months]

Any help most gratefully received avm228. Yes I have this 1841 census and think it correct too and yes I have also previously found the family with the Chimney Sweep father :( still hitting that brick wall....... So frustrating. Alexander Hunter and Martha Hefford I haven't looked at 8)

Wow Wendy, I've only just picked up your message, this is one long running thread. I haven't stopped trying to unravel this family mystery, actually I had another go just recently but didn't make much headway. I had Mary Ann and Sarah's parents as possibly John/Job Hunter and Mary Bodell taken from info found on the London C of E Baptism, Marriages and Burials records on Ancestry but I then found an annoying parallel family which seemed to fit better with Mary Bodell as they had a son named Bodell. Did you have any further luck? I have also just found you on Ancestry!

World War One / Re: 1/19th Battalion London Regiment information?
« on: Sunday 10 August 14 13:40 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for the replies and help guys. I hadn't found the second MIC :) I do also think the cards were written by the same person and that possibly the initials were mistakenly switched on them, as we are 100% positive that it is our George Herbert Hayward buried in Bailleul. Interesting and very confusing!!! Funny thing is our George never went by his given name and was always known as Herbert!

World War One / 1/19th Battalion London Regiment information?
« on: Friday 08 August 14 21:50 BST (UK)  »
For the centenary of WW1 I am researching my Grandmothers favourite Uncle; George Herbert Hayward of the 1/19th Battalion London Regiment who died 12th july 1917. He is buried at Bailleul Cemetery, France (info I found previously through the CWGC.) I have spent a thrilling afternoon reading the Battalion War Diaries downloaded from the National Archives which seems to suggest he may have died of wounds received in the trenches at Battlewood on 11th July. From scouring the internet this seems to be an area near Hill 60 at Zillebeke, Belgium. (I knew none of this this morning!) I've been looking for further info and have come across two different regimental numbers for him (or perhaps there were two George Herbert Haywards in the 19th London!) From his grave I have 613240 and from a medal Roll Index card I found 613050. This is my first dable into Military records, can anyone with more knowledge of the London Regiment help me find anything more or solve the two regimental number mystery? Thank you.

Canada Lookup Requests Completed / Re: Grimshaws Ontario

Crikey! This is what I love about the internet  :-* after an 'amazing' original flurry of information and incredible help over 7 years ago now this thread continues to give! Thank you so much Kelso for this new information it's wonderful to find out more about Edith. Did you read right through all the pages of Grimshaws Ontario? I posted a beautiful photo of Edith & Cecil as young children which I'd always wondered about. It has been amazing to find out so much. I've found a couple of people from both sides of this complicated story to help fill in some gaps but relish any further information, it is astonishing that the Grimshaws that stayed here in the UK never knew what mayhem Sidney caused!

Looks like Ellen 'Toyer' Currell died in December qtr of 1867 in Hatfield  :'( her babies were only 1 & 2 at the time, sad they ended up in the workhouse as there seems to be quite a lot of Currell families in the area.
