First I would look at the DNA matches who you have linked to in your family tree and verify that each of your Grandparents lines have your DNA matches linking to and beyond each of your Great Grandparents.  I did this by printing out a six generation chart and marking each Predecessor where a DNA match and I have them as a MRCA.

Depending where you have missing links I would ask Siblings and Cousins to take a DNA test.

Seek out Second Cousins and again see if they have taken or will take a DNA test.

By having close family DNA tested you can cross reference their DNA Matches with your own and use the results to narrow down the possibilities.

Keep options open and do not discount 1/2 relationships, as an example depending upon their age a 432 cM match could be the child of a 1/2 Niece or Nephew, the relationship could be that close and hence why having Siblings and Cousins DNA tested is always a good start to verify the validity or close relationships.

It has been happening for years.

Most of mine relate are people in the damn US of A who just happen to have the same name as one of my mainly British Isles Family Tree members.

It really annoys me when Searching and “UK & Ireland” is selected yet the search results are mainly people who are resident in that damn US of A again.

Alas Charting is not in my experience a useful feature of Roots Magic, it is by a country mile the worst software that I have with regards to said feature.

I have Roots Magic, Family Historian, Family Tree Maker, MacTree (Apple Mac only), & Reunion (Apple Mac only) and non of them does precisely what I want but Reunion is closest with the best Pedigree Chart.  Best not to ask why I seem to have accumulated so many different Apps.

I have not tried it myself but there are standalone Charting software available, the S&N Genealogy website has Charting Companion listed, this may give you what you seek.

BTW, a descendent chart goes from a specific predecessor forward in time and lists their descendants for as many generations as selected.  To clarify your kids and grandkids are your descendants, your parents, grandparents, GGP’s etc are your predecessors.

The Lighter Side / Re: Mass Observation Day 2024

A poor choice of terminology to explain the function.

Diary Day,

or

“The day when everyone records in writing every minute activity that they experience or undertake from waking to bedtime”

OK so that one may be a bit of a mouthful.

You get what you pay for.

Roots Magic 9 @ £36 for a fully working family tree building and usage software is hardly expensive.

It has the advantage of being able to download your full Ancestry family tree together with all the media via a few simple actions.

This is far better than using a Gedcom file.

Not had three generations in my results.

I have a couple of parent and child matches who have tested and the child has over 2x the cM shared with me than their parent has.

As they are on my Irish line finding where the probable cross pollination took place in the child’s line is a tad problematic,

I was hoping to smash down 2 brick walls but doesn't look like either will happen.  Both of my grandmother's had a father who was illegitimate so you know you're then stuck with no father on the BC.

G. Grandfather 1 nobody has tested in that line.

G. Grandfather 2 had me very confused as the matches all seem to have gone no further back than I have myself.

Now I admit to being very naive thinking it was like those DNA Family Secrets type TV programmes.  One line further back had all these half siblings so I spent 4 hours retracing all steps to see what I had gotten wrong.

I had been contacted by a young guy who is very into DNA and I told him I didn't understand. He told me that these tests are only as good as the people who you match with who've done the research.  For instance if 20 people have all copied and copied from one another that your G.G.Grandfather is Father Christmas then that's what you'll be shown on the Thruline.  He said "it's all just recycled user input".

Light bulb moment!! 💡

He is not quite right.

The only caveat that is need with a DNA match is identifying them by actual name, and said actual name does not necessarily need to be the user name you see.  Using shared DNA matches and cross referencing you can identify the match by birth name.

Ideally you want the Matches birth name displayed by them and at least one of their parents, but of course if they have built an accurate tree will help even more.  I have a 240 cM match who only had a tree of him and his Dad, that was enough, another 193 cM that had no tree, just his birth name took 5 minutes to link into my tree.  Conversely I have a 120 cM match that has been there for six years, all I have is his name and as there are over 150 births for a guy with his name that is not helping.

A tree can be a problem especially if they are a Newbie who have only built a tree as a direct result of taking a DNA test then said tree may be full of errors.

DNA can be a simple waiting game, keeping fingers crossed that a DNA match will eventually show who will lead to a few bricks being loosened at least.

It took me three years of persuasion before First Cousins took a DNA test, whereas look at videos online and they all have every Tom, Dick and Harriet in their close family tested

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Confusing DNA results
« on: Thursday 25 April 24 20:45 BST (UK)  »
I hope these results leave you less confused.

You did right testing with Ancestry but even still please do not take these Admixtures (Ethnicities) as 100% accurate.

You will find that over time they will change as a result of Ancestry having more DNA testers and they change their data management processes.

As an example my own DNA test dates back to 2017 and the results today look like they are for a totally different person.

For the vast majority of Genealogists the whole purpose of taking a DNA test is for it to provide matches who share DNA with you which in turn can help validate ones research and for the DNA results to help break down the brick walls.

The Common Room / Re: My Heritage
« on: Thursday 25 April 24 20:24 BST (UK)  »
Most definitely check every year for the last ten years if possible, or as far back as the Bank can go.

I’d then contact My Heritage by phone and ask why the debit has been taken on an account that obviously has been dormant.

Set low expectations from them.

They are all the same, it is very difficult to cancel a subscription online and it is only cancelled when one receives an eMail confirming the cancellation.

As an example, I cancelled My Heritage as soon as I renewed and took a screenshot.

As with Ancestry, it is going to expire with no Auto Renewal.
