Derbyshire / Doe Lea?Derbyshire
« on: Monday 30 June 08 14:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi, For many years now i have been trying to trace my grandads eldest brother. (grandad unfortunately died in 1952 befor i was born  and able to ask him about his siblings!)
Frederick william powell was born in 1871 in madeley/dawley shropshire
I CANNOT find him on the 1901 census but have found a william powell 1871 born madeley boarding with a family in Doe Lea.Occupation is miner which fits .
I am looking for a marriage for him and wondered if anyone was familiar with Doe Lea and where would be the nearest town.I  assume there was a mine and wondered if anyone had any knowledge of the area any pit disasters ? or if there is a  war memorial in the village?
Any information would be appreciated
thanks
chris

Would anyone know if the Weslelyan Methodist church in Madeley shropshire is still there? My great uncle married there in 1903 and i am trying to find out if he and his wife had any children Unfortunately the surname is Powell and searching on line is giving me numerous possibilities. Maybe a visit to the church might be my answer. Best wishes Chris

Canada / Woodstock Ontario
« on: Tuesday 23 May 06 11:26 BST (UK)  »
My g grandfather left England sometime between 1911 and 1915. He was William Tart (1867)born in Shropshire. His wife Theresa died in December 1911 so i am assuming he left after this date.He died in December 1915 in Woodstock Ontario. He left behind 3 daughters so I am curious what could have lead him to settle in woodstock. At the time of his death he was living at 43 Finkle street woodstock.
Could anyone give me any history on the place? What is Finkle street like now?
Thankyou    Chris
