A further suggestion Carol. According to the above article Mr Brookes was in Dunedin in 1848 and that is the year of Dunedin's founding. I recalled that the Otago Early Settlers Museum literally has walls dedicated to photos of its earliest inhabitants. Take a look.

Carol, I found this on our PapersPast site and the Nat Library. It is of a Thomas Brooks dated 30 Mar 1898. Comes from the Otago Witness and is your man. It's quite grainy as early press photos were

The photo appears on page 15 but the paragraph about him is on page 11

Contains a potted history of his arrival and his activities and family.

Might not help but the old NZSG marriage disc holds the record just as Carol has set it out.

I had a thought that the family's arrival might be mentioned in an obituary. They commonly were especially for early arrivals. I searched for Lawrence because they would be fewer than Davids. A report of his death appeared in the Mataura Ensign 28 Sept 1895 and can be found here. ( You will need to scroll to the bottom)

It indicates he arrived 1871ish after a stint in Australia and a trip back home to marry. The rest might have followed him, or come with him.

Hi Janette. Yes I had seen all that but Lindsay is after details on the headstones, if they exist. The NZSG on line transcriptions included the Old Oamaru graves but do not seem to include Oamaru Lawn. If it has been transcribed it's apparently not on the database. If that is the case then the answer lies in Oamaru or with those of us with access to the original fiche which might include Oamaru Lawn.

Lindsay, I now see you are after Constance Maud Gibson buried at the Oamaru Lawn Cemetery. I can't seem to find that one on the database. Perhaps the inscriptions have not been recorded. Found no reference to that cemetery at all.

I noted that the Old Cemetery records were originally transcribed by the North Otago Museum. Perhaps they could be worth an enquiry re the Lawn Cemetery.

Lindsay, the blocks seem to end at 220 before a couple of ashes lawns are listed. Can't see where a block 518 fits in but there is a Gibson couple in 218. There are 16 Gibson references in the index. Can you give me a full name for 518/6? Might be able to track them down, perhaps at anther cemetery.
