Berkshire / ROWELL / SMITH Newbury/Speen
« on: Sunday 26 September 10 19:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi, still on the trail of Newbury brewers I have come across a bunch of links to the SMITHs of Speen/Speenhamland.

In 1816 Sarah SMITH of Newbury d of Thomas SMITH married Robert ROWELL in London (St Mary le Bone)
Sarah was buried (aged 22) in Newbury in May 1818 after giving birth to Thomas Robert a month earlier.
Robert ROWELL remarried in Jan 1819 - to Elizabeth SMITH (London, St Dunstan's in the West).

Robert ROWELL became a partner (before 1818) in what would later become the Newbury Brewery Co - possibly through his SMITH connections.

Another partner John SATCHELL married Mary SMITH in 1824.

And William SMITH married Harriet TOWNSEND (co-heiress to the brewery) in 1898

Is anyone researching SMITHs in this area? Could all these SMITHs (Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, & William) be siblings?

Berkshire / GOODEN - Speen
« on: Tuesday 01 June 10 18:05 BST (UK)  »
Anyone researching these famlies?

Henry Gooden (d1766, bur Speen), wife Sarah Petworth (m 1748, Shaw).
Children: Sarah (c1750, Speen), Hannah (c1752, Speen; m Thomas Hill of Harley St, Westminster).

and

Richard Gooden, wife Sarah Kember (m 1764, Speen)
Children: Henry (c 1767, Speen); William (c1768, Speen); Alice Elizabeth (c1770, Speen) m Edmund Estcourt Gale; Sarah (c1775, Speen).

I'm trying to make a connection between these two families - could a child of Alice Elizabeth have inherited property once owned by Henry's widow Sarah (nee Petworth)?

Anyone in the Newbury area who is interested in the operation of the poor laws in Berkshire might be interested in a talk on the subject by county archivist, Dr Peter Durrant.

Berkshire / Townsend, Newbury
« on: Wednesday 04 March 09 14:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for information on the Townsend family of Newbury. Various members were brewers or mealmen and several classed themselves as gents. Several were mayors.

Trying to sort out the faily relationships and in particular, which of the Johns was town sergeant (as shown in his burial register entry in 1780).

Berkshire / Rowell - Newbury/Speen
« on: Sunday 08 February 09 10:46 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have any connections to Robert Rowell sometime brewer in Newbury? His partnership in the Castle Brewery was dissolved in 1831.

Possible (probable) connections include Thomas Smith (d 1843) of Speen and his grandson, Thomas Robert Rowell (1818-1877), owners of 7 pubs in and around Newbury.

Trying to find the connection.

Thomas Robert Rowell moved around (1851: Speen, 1868: Bath, 1877:Cookham RD)

Berkshire / What have these chaps got in common?
« on: Friday 06 February 09 23:20 GMT (UK)  »
The following list of Newburians appears in the Newbury Weekly News of 8 Jan 1868. I thought it would be interesting to see if anyone could guess what they had in common. If any descendants want a copy of the article make yourselves known. I'm particularly interested in anyone who has researched the brewers (in bold).

The Common Room / E-Petition for BMD access
« on: Monday 02 February 09 15:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

A chap called David Lloyd has started an e-petition to ask the Prime Minister to allow full access to the England and Wales BMD registers from 1837 to 1908. This would end the need for £7 certificates.

Given the seeming collapse of the DOVE project to digitise these records I think this petition is worthy of massive support from family historians. So far 500 people have signed up - it needs thousands before it will be taken seriously.

To support this go to http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/OpenBMDrecords/ and sign up.
