Nottinghamshire / Locations in Old Radford
« on: Saturday 11 August 07 06:26 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I have found a photograph in my late father's possessions of a school in Nottingham, which I believe he and his brothers attended as children during the 1920s. He has called it Forster Street School but the name on the building looks like Sidney Pearson Hill Primary School. I also have some photographs of Citadel Street (which is where I think his family lived) during a period of re-development and also of a shop on Monument Street called Edmonds and R**don (partially obstructed by a lamp post) Electrical Contractors 704879. The school looks as if it is derelict and about to be demolished and I would be interested to find out when these photos could have been taken (probably on a return visit to the area) and whether Sidney Pearson Hill is a place name or some local worthy.

On the 1901 census, my father's family is living in Landseer Street. Old Radford, which no longer exists, probably re-named. In the census, it follows on from Coleridge Street, which I have found on a street map of the area. Any information on these places would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Shropshire / Black Mountain, Cefn Calanog 1861 census
« on: Saturday 09 June 07 17:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello

An ancestor of mine, Alfred John Jones b 25/12/1854 Velindre, Radnorshire, was living with his family (father William Jones, tailor) at Black Mountain, Cefn Calanog in 1861. Reference is: 1861 Wales census RG9/4234 Folio 29 page 7 (no. of schedule 25). The reason I am posting to the Shropshire board is, although it features in a Wales census, Cefn Calanog is actually in the Parish of Bettws-y-Crwyn Shropshire

I noticed in the census that there were several addresses called Black Mountain and am interested to find out what these were: cottages, farm buildings or a roadway - maybe something of that type. They appear on different pages of the census so they may not be a block of buildings together in one place. Just before and after this entry is something called Pentiken and something called Riddin, which apparently means cleared land.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hello

Before I take on the complexities of the National Archives, I wondered whether anyone could confirm some information for me regarding my great great grandfather (named above).

He was born in Devonport and worked as a coastguard with postings in Wales, Ireland and North Devon. I believe he was based in Dingle with his wife Alice between 1908-1917. He had two children born in Ireland: John Henry 07/04/1908 (Dingle) and Emily Alice 2/10/1909 (Ventry). Family memories say that he was in Ireland when the Lusitania went down in 1915 and we think he left Ireland around about 1917. I know that he was definitely back in the UK by 1919 and based in Appledore, N. Devon.

I am sorry I can not be exact about the dates of his postings and would be grateful for any information.

Thanks

Update:

I now have my great grandfather's service records. This has thrown up two questions, which I am struggling to find any further information on:

1) At the end of his service record there is an entry: Transferred to Coastguard NF 1/5/1919. See Special register. I believe that this probably refers to the transfer of some of the services to the Ministry of Transport but would like to know where I can access this register.

2) Amongst his postings were Pembroke 1, Wildfire and Gloucestershire; I would be grateful if anyone knows these exact locations or maybe where I could find the information.

Update (2) August 19th 2007

I have now visited the National Archives and found the information I was looking for. If anyone is interested in finding similar information the index and subsequent records are on microfilm and catalogue references are: ADM 175/88 and ADM 175/83A. I believe the NF reference on his transfer on May 1919 refers to the New (coast guard) Force. His Royal Navy service number was carried forward with him.

Hello

I am looking for information on the ancestors of William Hammond b1821 Frensham.

I have plenty of information on the family from the 1841 census onwards and I know that William's father was a farmer and that the family moved to Sussex between William jnr's birth in 1821 and his brother's birth in 1827.

I know that his father was also called William and was born in Frensham but I do not know when. William jnr's mother was Elizabeth and she was born in Ashington Sussex. I do not know her maiden name (so I can not trace her birth) or when or where they married.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Nottinghamshire / The Lawson family - running out of options
« on: Tuesday 06 March 07 11:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I am hoping that someone can give me some advice on what my next steps should be or, even better, some clues on this family that will help me discover their origins.

I am looking for the family of William Lawson, who was born in Leicester (according to census) in about 1815, son of George Lawson and Susanna (surname unknown).

I have no trace on George (he died before 1841). Susanna was born in Nottingham according to the 1841 census (HO107/867/7 folio 36 - South Street, Snenton, Notts.
Susannah Lawson 55 laundress Jemima 25 lace maker, Catherine 25 lace maker, Amey 25 dress maker and Eliza 11).

What I have found actually makes things slightly more difficult; it is this mass christening at Radford St Peter's, parents are George Lawson (coach maker) and Susanna:

Catherine LAWSON 29 10 1815, Edward LAWSON 29 10 1815, Eliza LAWSON 29 10 1815, Amy LAWSON 10 10 1815, George LAWSON 29 10 1815, Jemima LAWSON 29 10 1815, Matilda LAWSON C 29 10 1815, Priscilla LAWSON 29 10 1815, William LAWSON 29 10 1815.

I contacted the Nottingham FHS for a copy of the parish baptism registers but they have very little information other than they are all described as FWKs (frame work knitters). I then found out that one reason for these mass christenings was re-settlement in a new parish, a sort of early means-testing. I contacted Nottinghamshire archives but they have no record of a settlement examination or certificate for the Lawson family in Radford.

This has pretty much exhausted my expertise on this search. I am limited by not knowing the actual date and place of birth of the children and the place of marriage and maiden name of the parents. I have managed to construct a credible line for the children of William Lawson's brother Edward but also no exact date and place of birth for him (it's not Nottingham).

I would appreciate any advice on how to progress. I know that the people I am looking for maybe were not born in Nottingham but I suspect Nottingham is where the records are. I suppose what would really help is to find out if it is possible to discover more information from the baptism records or whether what I have from the FHS is all that there is (name of parents, date and place of christening, abode and father's profession).

To add some more complexity to the mix, there are a lot of Lawsons in Nottingham and I have had to be very careful not to go down false trails, hence all this detail.

Thanks in advance

Hello

I am trying to find and also confirm information on the family of my grandmother Bertha Holton nee Jones.

Bertha was born in 1882 in Nottingham, daughter of Alfred John Jones, a tailor, of Velindre Radnorshire and Susannah nee Lawson of Nottingham. She married Ernest Albert Holton, a railway inspector, in Nottingham in 1905 and died in 1935 of cancer shortly after the family relocated to Buxton Derbyshire. She had three children Ernest, Leonard and Harold Wilfred (my father) all now dead.

In the 1891 and 1901 census she was living at 5 Landseer Street Radford.

Bertha's siblings were (all born Nottingham):
Blanche Eliza b1879 d1884
Ruth b1881
Albert b1885 (m Emily Barnes?)
Roselia b1885 (m Charles Shaw?)
Gwendoline b1888
Llewellyn b1890 (m Elsie Howard?)
Janet Lawson b1892
Leonard b1895
Wilfred Lawson b1897

I would be very grateful for any information on any part of this family in Nottingham.

Thanks.

Australia / ACWORTH to Australia (Brisbane) 1886-1888
« on: Sunday 11 February 07 11:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I am looking to find any information on the Acworth family who emigrated to Australia between 1886 and 1888. They settled in Brisbane but I do not know the port of arrival. Their last residence in the UK was in the London area.

The family was Louis Acworth b1853 (burial date 01/04/1890 Brisbane), wife Elizabeth Maud nee Bryant b1851 (burial date 31/12/1937 Brisbane) and children: Alice, Louis, Walter, Clare, Arthur and William. Two children were born in Brisbane: Edwin in 1888 and Louis in 1890.

As I have discovered military service records, it is possible that Louis travelled with his brother William Alfred and wife Elizabeth nee Beiley, although it is also possible that they may have joined them later.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Lancashire / Benjamin Bryant b1822 Liverpool
« on: Saturday 10 February 07 17:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I am looking for any information on the family of Benjamin Bryant b1822 Liverpool. His parents may be John Bryant of Dublin and Mary Groom of Stepney but this is only by deduction and there is no evidential connection.

I have records on Benjamin from his wedding in 1845 onwards (Brixton, London) but no baptism record or 1841 census entry.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
