Norfolk / Hellesdon Parish records - Reynolds - 1840s
« on: Thursday 09 April 09 16:54 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to confirm the parents of a Reynolds family and am running into some problems - I hope someone will be able to help.

I have two baptism records from the IGI but can not find corresponding birth registration entries in the BMD registers. These are:

Mary Reynolds Christening: 10 JUL 1842 Hellesdon, Norfolk, England. Father: Thomas Reynolds Mother: Sarah
Susanna Reynolds Christening: 15 DEC 1844 Hellesdon, Norfolk, England. Father: Thomas Reynolds. Mother: Sarah

I am trying to discover the mother's maiden name. I can not find the birth registrations, which only leaves me with the Parish records. I am perfectly happy to send off for these but I am not sure whether they will contain any more information than the IGI records.

If anyone has access to Hellesdon Parish records would it be possible to tell me if the mother's maiden name is recorded?

Thanks

Nottingham Completed Lookup Requests / Miss Lucy Jones, costumier, 1913 onwards - Resolved
« on: Wednesday 26 November 08 11:26 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace who this individual is and whether she may be a relative of mine.

My great grandfather Alfred John Jones was a tailor in the early 1900s. In the 1915/16 Wrights Directory of Nottingham his address is recorded as 49 Radford Boulevard. Also at this address is a Miss Lucy Jones, costumier. Her other address is recorded as Beswick Chambers, 53a Upper Parliament Street, which is also the same address as a company called Jones Brothers, tailors. This address structure is the same in the 1913/14 Wrights Directory except there is no Jones Brothers company. Lucy does not feature in the 1910/11 Directory.

The dilemma is that Lucy does not appear to be direct or even extended family (as far as I can see) nor does my great grandfather appear to have had any relatives in the tailoring trade (as far as I am aware). I do not know how old Lucy is or where she was born. There is a very 'slightly possible' in the 1901 census but that is only down to location (born in Shropshire then resident in Nottingham) but I can not find any family connection at all.

My question is: do I have enough information here to be able to find out significantly more about her through other sources, such as electoral roll or property leasing records? I live nowhere near Nottingham, so libraries are not an option, and the archive centre seems to have very hefty research charges, especially for what could turn out to be speculative searches.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Nottingham Completed Lookup Requests / 44 Melbourne Road Aspley 1970s/80s - Resolved
« on: Monday 24 November 08 13:55 GMT (UK)  »
Before I begin delving into the complexities of local government enquiries, would anyone happen to know if the above property was likely to be council/housing association stock in the 1970s and 1980s?

Thanks

Sussex / Coastguard station St Michael's Hastings 1861 - Concluded
« on: Thursday 13 November 08 13:29 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to pinpoint the (former) site of the CG station at St Michael's Hastings. One of my ancestors, Richard Squire, was located there at the time of the 1861 census (RG9/561 Folio 210 Page 75), although his service record calls it Bexhill station.

The address run in to the CG station includes Bohemia Road, now the A21, then Dorset Place and St Michael's Place, all of which I have found. This is followed by Garden Cottages and the Officer's house then the Coastguard station. Would this put it on or near White Rock Road where it meets Carlisle Parade?

Thanks

Nottinghamshire / Businesses in Greyhound Street 1930s - Resolved
« on: Thursday 07 August 08 10:02 BST (UK)  »
Would it be possible for me to find out what businesses were operating in Greyhound Street in the 1930s? I believe my great grandfather, Alfred John Jones, ran a tailoring business there with another family member. It is the other family member that may be of interest to me.

Leicestershire / The Lawsons of Leicester
« on: Tuesday 05 August 08 15:11 BST (UK)  »
This is a complicated piece of research because it involves births in one county (Leicestershire) but baptisms in another county pre-1837 (Mike in Leicester has already had some input to this query on the Nottinghamshire board), so I will try to keep it simple in the first instance. I have the baptism records of the Lawson children and the census-derived information about their county of birth - at this stage I do not think it would add anything to include them.

Firstly, I am trying to find out whether I can discover the parent and occupation of the groom in these two marriages:

i) George Lawson 10th April 1798 to a Rebecca Holmes at St Nicholas Leicester;
ii) St Mary de Magdalene Parish Knighton. Leicester. Banns & Marriage Registers: ANNO DOMINI 1801. Entry No. Six. George Lawson & Susanna Riley Both of this Parish. Married in this Church following Banns Published without Prohibition. On Sunday February 22nd. March 1st.& 8th. By me :- Wm. Hayton. Curate.
This Fifteenth day March. One Thousand Eight Hundred and One.
George Lawson. .... WIDOWER. Susanna Riley. .... Spinster.
George signed by own signature =  Geo. Lawson.
Susanna signed by own signature = Susanna Riley.
Wit’s :~  John Riley & William Riley. (Information supplied by Mike in Leicester 8th March 2007)

Secondly, where should I look for Leicestershire death records for Rebecca Lawson between 1798-1801?

To help me build the ancestry of George Lawson, I need to discover whether these two George Lawsons are one and the same, even if only to eliminate possible connections. He is dead by the time of the 1841 census, probably buried in Nottingham.

Thanks

Nottinghamshire / Wenson or Wensor Avenue SW Nottingham 1937 - Completed, thanks
« on: Wednesday 09 July 08 13:26 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother's death certificate has her place of death as 8 Wenson or Wensor Avenue in sub-district Nottingham South West. I can not find it on modern maps and would be grateful if someone would be able to locate it for me.

Many thanks

Sussex / Steyning Poor Law Union Workhouse - Shoreham 1861
« on: Friday 22 February 08 14:14 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find any information on an inmate in the Shoreham workhouse, who features in the 1861 census. He may be a significant relative of mine and may have absconded from here and changed his name to avoid being found. His name is John Burgess, aged 11 born Westminster St Margaret. The census ref is RG9/603 Folio 112 Page 40. I am following this particular trail because of some coincidental dates, place of birth and, above all, names: there is a family called Gravett resident here and he changed his name to John Gayett. I am waiting for a copy of his birth certificate to see if that casts any further light. His workhouse records would be of great help even if they only serve to eliminate him as a possibility.

I have been in touch with the East Sussex Archives but it seems that they only have guardian minutes covering this date (1835-1930 ref G 9/1a/1-59). I have followed their recommendations and searched the A2A and workhouses.org sites without success.

I have two main questions: is there anywhere else I could try for these workhouse records; and, it is possible he may have been transferred to a local training ship - do any records exist for those?

Thanks in advance

I am trying to find some further information on my great x 3 grandfather, Henry Squire born circa 1786. I have plenty of information on him from the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census until his death in 1870 (census refs follow). I know he was a Royal Marine and I know how to unravel that information. What I do not know is where he was born (baptised) or anything of his parents or siblings.

The census returns give his place of birth as variously Bradrich or Bradwich, which I assume is a stab at Brandninch, as I cannot find another location which may fit the bill. Unfortunately, Brandninch is not on the IGI and I would be interested if anyone has Parish records if they could either confirm or deny his existence there. I do not have specific enough dates to approach the Devon GRO at this point.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me..
