Hi Russell,

You've been a great help to me!  I was looking for direction as I'm rather intimidated starting in new countries without understanding registration districts, history,  etc.   But you graciously provided much more, for that I do thank you. Took almost a year to work through the Canadian districts, sources, etc.  But as you say, it becomes addictive.  Amazing to me how close the search makes you to feel to relatives never known!

Been researching Welsh records.....with all those common names of Williams, Davies, Thomas, etc, it makes a "find" quite exciting.  Just ordered a large number of certificates from the GRO, anxious to see if what I think are "finds" really are.

I'll do the same with the Scot records, the actual certificates might lead me to Robert's identify. Wasn't  aware records could be viewed without subscribing, makes for a good service.

Again thank you.  Millie

Russell,

Just got back to my computer....how very interesting to find your Quarrier connection.  Sound like a fine group there.  I was more than pleased with the material they sent me, and so quickly.  A few things I didn't understand, like the medical condition leaving the children's mother unfit for work, and also the location of her two brothers...one Plantation, the other Helenburgh.  Can you identify what area they might be in?

Should you ever find time to take a look...they were on page 136 of a journal with admission date of Sept. 1883...Mother Susan McGinlay.

Good to hear from you....with great appreciation, Millie

Researching is very new to me....when I found g'mother and siblings Canadian placements, concentrated on following them into adulthood and their family lines.  Just turning to Scotland....and did not know quite how to begin.  Your thoughts are most helpful, Russell, and I will follow through.  Interesting sidebar....the children went from Renfrew Lane to Renfrew County, Ontario!

Thanks, Russell, appreciate your input.  Quarriers were extremely helpful in sharing what info they had.  I gleaned the parents were unmarried.....Susan's brothers' offered to pay for the marriage, but Cook would not agree.  Apparently she left and went to her mother's home in Glascow. Brothers provided funds for Cook to "come through". He acknowledged receipt of funds, then disappeared.  I interpreted  "come through" to mean transportation from wherever he was located.

I will give Scotland's people a try....again, thank you!

Hello,  I could use a bit of guidance.  My grandmother and 2 siblings were left in care of Quarriers home for children back in 1883.  In 1884, they were transported with a group of children to Canada.  At that time Susan (g'mother) was 6, sister Anne 8, and brother Robert was 4.  There were about 120,000 children sent to Canada over the years, known as "British Home Children".  Been able to trace the children in Canada and my g'mother to the US...now trying to find information on their parents.  What I know, from Quarrier's intake records:

Parents: Robert Cook and Susan McGinlay.  Children:  Susan Cook, born July 12, 1877, Anne born Jan 27, 1876 and Robert born May 1, 1879.

Quarrier records indicates parents separated, Susan McGinlay was living in the P.H. as she could no longer stay with her mother on Renfrew Lane, and could no longer care for the children.

G'mother's death certificate claims mother as "Susan Fraser", so she apparently married along the way.

I don't know where children were born, or which areas to access.  Any thoughts or directions for research you might suggest?  Thank you so much for any assistance.

Caernarvonshire Lookup Requests / Re: Marriage Lookup

Hi, I'm well aware of the commonality of Williams.   I was hoping with the parent's names of William Williams and Elizabeth Jones of Pawllheli it would narrow things.

In 1881 census, Ellen was 11 (born 1870?) and Mary l (born 1880?)  They were in the parish of Denio. I have no other information.  I have been hoping to find a marriage record to trace their families and hopefully connect with some cousins.  Without a groom's name, this may be impossible.
I've been trying through Free BMD without success.

The only thing I have is a letter written to my grandmother in Welsh and a Christmas Card to "Aunt Annie" from Mr.& Mrs. Jones of Tn-y-Gate, Fourcrosses, Chwilog.

My grandmother was their sister, Anna, who with her husband immigrated to the states.  Thank you for your post.

Attempting to trace families of g'mother's siblings.

Greatly appreciate a marriage lookup on Ellen Williams born about 1870 in Pawllheli to William Williams and wife Elizabeth Jones.

Also, marriage for sister Mary Williams born about 1880 , same parents, same place.  Thank you!

Again, my deep thanks for all your help.  I'm rather new to genealogy and this is the first time I've posted or utilized Roots chat.....so you might imagine my surprise and delight!  G'mother Annie and I were very close (only gram I had!).  We never talked about the "old country" until late in her life.  She would try to tell me where she came from, but with unfamiliar locations and her accent, I never got it right.....which gave Annie a lot of laughs.

Owen died young -- age 44 in 1927.  Annie provided info for the death certificate re parentage, with their daughter, Lizzie Mary,  providing the same for Annie in 1959. They lived in Granville, New York with many Thomas, Williams, Jones, Davies, Hughes.....quite a large Welsh community with two churches. They all continued to use their native language and didn't become fluent in English.  This slate valley area of our state, nestled between the Green Mountains reminds me of some of the areas of Wales I have visited.

Again, my thanks, and I will take your suggestion and post on the Canarvon site.

Your efforts are greatly appreciated!  Thank you so much!  Annie's death certificates lists parents as Elizabeth Jones and William Williams, so I think you found the family!

Stories were told of Annie working as a servant, so that might be accurate too.  Another was told of a sister working for Lloyd George......unfortunately I didn't pay much attention as a child.

Owen's death certificate lists George Thomas and Mary Jones as parents.

Thank you for your help.
