Australia / Annely WOODCOCK - what happened to him?
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 01:52 GMT (UK)  »
I have an Annely Woodcock, born about 1832 in Solihull, Warwickshire, occupation: Labourer. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1852 on the same ship as his sister Jane FELTON (nee Woodcock) - the ""William Hyde".
The "William Hyde", 533 tons, barque, sailed from London 21 Oct 1851 and arrived Lyttelton 5 February, 1852 with passengers and cargo and later proceeded to New Plymouth, arriving there in early March.
Annely is under "Assisted Steerage" on the shipping list as: Wooduck Anneley 20 M Ag. Laborer

Today I found out that he then moved over to Victoria, Australia, and married in 1855 an Irishwoman named Margaret SINNOT (daughter of Michael Sinnot, farmer, and Mary MURPHY). Annely must have emigrated to Australia between 1852 and 1855 (but I haven't found details about the ship yet).
They had a daughter, Mary Ann Woodcock, b 1855 - d 1859 (I've seen her birth record on the Dept of Justive, Victoria website, but decided to purchase her death record instead; also Mary Ann's birth record has her father's name indexed as 'Annealy' and mother's maiden name as 'Sinnott'. Her death record has her father's name written as 'Annely' and mother's maiden name as 'Sinnot').

I've lost all trace of Annely post-1859, and haven't even found a death record for him on the Dept of Justice, Victoria, website. I've also checked online catalogues in other states of Australia for his death, but no luck there.
Does anyone know what became of Annely and his wife Margaret Woodcock (nee Sinnot)? What ship did he come to Australia on? Where did he die?

I also have him on the 1841 England census with his parents (in High Street, Solihull) as "Annerley, age 9". But I can't find him on an 1851 England census

Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Thyrza Ann WHYLE - stuck, please help!
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 00:44 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find Thyrza Ann WHYLE on the England and Wales birth index.
She was born 27 Oct 1892 (don't know the place). She married Isaac Jones on 22 Aug 1914, in Smethwick, West Midlands, England. Her marriage cert says that her father's name was John and that he was a Collier. But I can't find him or Thyrza on any censuses. Nor can I find her on the birth index. But I have found her on the death index (she died 1981, June quarter, in Birmingham). Thyrza had at least two sisters: one possibly named 'Polly', the other 'Eliza'.

Please can somebody help me?

Many thanks

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Can somebody please DATE this photo?
« on: Thursday 18 December 08 01:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I'm enquiring on behalf of another rellie of my husband's ...
We need to figure out the approximate date of this photo, but I have no idea who it could be (though it is a mystery CLELAND ancestor from Scotland - that's all we know).

If another larger/higher resolution scan is needed I'll ask and see if my rellie can rescan and send me another larger copy.

Many thanks

Rachel
PS: Restoration isn't needed at this stage  ;)

Family History Beginners Board / Why can't I find this person on the Birth Index?
« on: Wednesday 26 November 08 22:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I'm a bit flabbergasted!
I'm trying to find a Leslie Stewart STALLWORTHY on the birth index, but can't find him at all!
He died June quarter, 1970, Watford, Vol 4b, Page 819. The death index gave his date of birth as 10 May 1908... but I've scoured all the quarters around this period, but no luck at all.
I'm trying to see if it gives his mother's maiden name as BECKS (first names: Rose Marion).

Please help!!  :(

Hello

I have a William BATTY, who according to the IGI married Elizabeth CROFT on 19 Dec 1733 in Withernwick.
However, another person has contacted me saying that they also have an Elizabeth CROFT who married a man named Richard LOWSON on 9 Nov 1732 in Withernwick, Yorkshire.

Are these marriage dates right? Are they the same Elizabeth Croft, and what are her parents names?
Was the Elizabeth who married William Batty christened at Withernwick on 14 Dec 1710? (source IGI)
Did she die in Withernwick on 5 Feb 1764? Or did she die in Feb 1744 in Withernwick, and was buried 5 Feb 1744 in Aldbrough, Yorkshire? There is a confusing bunch of public member trees on the ancestry website.

Please help!  :-[

Many thanks

« on: Monday 06 October 08 03:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I found a birth announcement in the Evening Post
(Wellington) newspaper, dated 30 June 1900. It was on the Papers Past
website.
It reads:
"Birth. SOUTHEE.- On the 25th June at the residence of her father, Mr.
D. Simpson, Akatawara-road, Upper Hutt, the wife of A. W. Southee, of
a daughter"

Could someone please be able to provide me with a first name for this baby?

Many thanks

England / Locating divorce papers in the U.K.
« on: Wednesday 01 October 08 23:20 BST (UK)  »
I'm a product of my granddad's second marriage, but some time ago I heard that he was once married before, between the years of 1935 and 1945 to his first wife, Martha Edwards.

I have some old papers, which give information:
(Decree Absolute for Dissolution of Marriage).
In the High Court of Justice. Probate Divorce and Admiralty Division. (Divorce). Hanley District Registry of the High Court.
Before the Honourable Sir Alfred Denning, Knight, one of the Justices of the High Court, sitting at the Royal Courts of Justice, Strand, in the County of Middlesex, on the 10th day of September 1945.
Between Martha Gould (Petitioner) and Donald Gould (Respondent).

My granddad had two children from his first marriage, and I would like to see if I can find them.

I was wondering how I go about obtaining copies of the divorce papers from my end (New Zealand). Is it possible to do this?

Many thanks

New Zealand Completed Requests / Lily Myrtle Mabel SOUTHEE - COMPLETED
« on: Monday 29 September 08 04:25 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out what happened to Lily Myrtle Mabel SOUTHEE (possibly born 1900 in Wellington, New Zealand).

Her parents, John Alfred Southee (b 1876, Mangaroa, Upper Hutt; d 1952, Brisbane, Queensland, Aus) and Matilda Ann SIMPSON (b 1872, Dundee, SCT; d 1952, Auckland, New Zealand) divorced.

Both John and Matilda remarried: John to Sarah SOUTHEE (his first cousin), and Matilda to George Southee (John Southee's uncle).

John and his second wife, Sarah, emigrated to Australia. His daughter, Lily, stayed behind with her mother, Matilda. All trace has been lost of Lily. Does anyone out there know what happened to her?

Many thanks
Rachel
