Europe / SUMMERS and HARDIE to Portugal? (ex-Fife, Scotland)
« on: Monday 15 September 08 22:28 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I'm tracing my husband's (Bruce's) SUMMERS family who originated from Scotland.

Jessie SUMMERS (b 20 Jun 1883, Markinch, Fife) married Robert HARDIE (b abt 1879 in Scotland) on the 29 Dec 1911 at Rothes, Markinch, Fife. Both were paper mill workers.
I've been unable to trace either of their deaths on the Scotlands Peoples website, and was wondering if they possibly emigrated after 1911 to another country, possibly Portugal?

Jessie had a sister, Christina Summers (b 18 May 1895, Markinch), and I've been unable to trace Christina's death. It transpires (after making contact with another descendant) that Christina moved to Portugal, married and later died there.

Did Jessie Hardie (nee Summers) end up in Portugal, too? What happened to these Summers sisters and their descendants? I'm wondering if Bruce has extended family in Portugal? How do I go about finding them?

Many thanks
Rachel

New Zealand Completed Requests / Dunedin death look-up please **COMPLETED**
« on: Tuesday 02 September 08 23:27 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I have a relative named John SUMMERS, b 22 Jan 1859 in Kinglassie, Fife, Scotland.
John, who worked in the paper-making trade, emigrated to New Zealand in c1914. His wife and son were to follow him but The Great War broke out and they were unable to travel out to NZ. John never returned to Scotland.
John died about 1937 in Dunedin.
Can anybody out there find him on the death index, or know where his grave could be?

Many thanks
Rachel

Family History Beginners Board / Ancestry.co.uk
« on: Thursday 17 July 08 23:28 BST (UK)  »
Hello  :)

I'm planning on buying a subscription to Ancestry.co.uk, but the current price is a bit steep when I convert it to the New Zealand dollar.
Does anyone out there know when they have their sale/discount price on the subscriptions to Ancestry, roughly? What time of year?

Many thanks

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / William J. WOODCOCK
« on: Thursday 17 July 08 22:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I have a William J. Woodcock who married a woman with the surname BOYCE in the March quarter of 1919, in Evesham.
Would anyone out there who has access to the 1901 census please be able to see if they could locate William and his parents? There is a possibility of this William being linked to the Woodcocks of Solihull, Warwickshire.

Many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Relative was potentially a Nazi - please help
« on: Wednesday 11 June 08 06:34 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I'm researching on behalf of an extended family member. I have a problem which is too tricky to solve alone, as I have no experience in this sensitive area!
Apparently their grandfather, an Austrian emmigrant to South Africa, was a Nazi party member.
Is there any way to verify this for family member? This individual married a Jewish woman, later divorced, and commited a murder and was sent back to Europe between the years 1942-1950.

Many thanks

South Africa / murder in Woodstock, Cape Town
« on: Wednesday 11 June 08 05:42 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I'm in New Zealand and I'm trying to find out if there is any information available regarding a murder case that happened between the years 1942 - 1950, in Woodstock, Cape Town.
It involved a Austrian immigrant named Fritz Ferdinand BARNACK.

Are there any online/digitised newspapers from that area (Woodstock)? Is any kind soul out there in that part of the world able to do a search for me please?

Many many thanks

Hello

I'm seeking the death index reference for a James John Mills, a furniture dealer, of Auckland.
He died in October, the 3rd (or 4th?) of 1883, and appears to have been murdered at the Auckland Lunatic Asylum by a fellow inmate (named Gschnell). I found this information in a Papers Past digisted newspaper article "Murderous Assault by a Lunatic").
Also, is there anywhere I can go to find out information about the court proceedings that followed?

Can anyone out there help?

Many thanks

Hello

I have an old photo which belonged to my mother's mother. On the back is written "Mr and Mrs Hastings", but there is no date. Is somebody out there able to date this photo for me please? I don't mind restorers having a go restoring it either  :)

Many thanks
Rachel
