Occupation Interests / Harmly's Idiot?
« on: Wednesday 31 October 07 21:48 GMT (UK)  »
I've been researching my GUEST family and have come across them on 1851 and 1861 censuses in Christleton, Cheshire.
One of the occupations of a relative is "Harmly's Idiot" for both of those censuses.
(1861 - RG9/2628; Folio 125 Page 13 )
Also, in the 1851 census, in the "Relation to Head of Family" column it says that the youngest person in the GUEST household that they're a "nurse child".
(1851 HO107/2171 Folio 420 Page 8.)
This person, George Guest, shares the same surname as the head of the family.

What do both of these things mean?

Many thanks

Rachel

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Eskrett, Elsie Elizabeth (b 1890) in Beverley
« on: Wednesday 05 July 06 05:11 BST (UK)  »
Eskrett, Elsie Elizabeth, b. 1890, in Beverley, Yorkshire.

Hello
I'm seeking the family of my maternal grandmother, Lilian Dick (nee Gould, born in Myton in 1914). Lilian's mother was Elsie Elizabeth Eskrett (sometimes spelt in other various ways, such as Escritt, Eskritt and Escreet).

Elsie's birth details are: Beverley, vol 9d, 103, Registered Sept 1890.

I'm not too sure who Elsie's parents were. Possibly a William Eskritt and Edith Ann Hastings (marriage recorded in the yorkshire marriage index for 1886). Other possible parents are William M (Myers?) Escreet and Edith M. Markham (marriage also recorded in the yorkshire marriage index for 1886!)

The only concrete information that I have is my grandmother's (Lilian's) birth certificate:

1914 Birth in the Sub-District of Myton in the County of Kingston-Upon-Hull.
Born on the 15th May 1914, 9 Hunts Terrace, West Parade U.D.
Name: Lilian;
Sex: girl;
Name and Surname of Father: Arthur Dick;
Name and Maiden Surname of Mother: Elsie Elizabeth Dick, formerly Eskrett;
Rank or Profession of Father: Dock Labourer;
Signature, Description and Residence of Informant: E. E. Dick, Mother, 9 Hunt's Terrace, West Parade, Hull;
When Registered: 20th June 1914.
Entry number: 150 in the Register Book of Births, No. 55 for the said Sub-District of Myton

My grandma told me that Elsie died at a young age - was institutionalised and all her children put into care. Lilian's other siblings include: Queenie May, Charles, Arthur and Florence Dick.
Lilian married Donald Gould (b 1912, of Hope in Wales), Queenie May married Joe Hager, Charles married Alice, and I'm not sure who Arthur and Florence married.

If anyone can help me find out Elsie Elizabeth's parents, I'd really appreciate it!

Kind regards
Rachel  :)
