Lancashire Lookup Requests / Historic Stillbirth Register?
« on: Thursday 25 April 13 05:35 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to the Historic Stillbirth Register and would be willing to do a lookup? A friend is trying to find out something for her mother Josephine. Josephine's parents had twins in 1932 - the boy lived but, sadly, the girl died. Josephine is in her 80s and lives in Australia now and has always wanted to know if her sister was named and whether she might have a burial place.

I have the address for the GRO and she would be able to apply for the information from them, because she's a sibling and both parents are deceased, but I thought it was worth asking. It might save delay and the cost of buying all the certificate copies she'd need in order to apply. The baby's surname was Campbell. The boy twin was registered in the September quarter of 1932 in West Derby.

Thank you.

London and Middlesex / Robert Taber SELDON, born 1835, London
« on: Wednesday 03 April 13 06:39 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone lost this person from their family tree? He was the son of Robert SELDON, a ship insurance broker, and Harriet Butler HANSON. I may be able to help if there's someone looking for him.

I read an inquest deposition a few weeks ago. The inquest took place in January 1853 on the body of an unknown young man found dead on St Kilda Beach, Melbourne, Australia. On reading further, I found that some of deceased's clothing was labelled "R. S. Seldon 52" but although enquiries were made the victim was never identified.

I did some research because I'm a stickybeak, and I think that he may have been Robert Taber SELDON. Robert appears with his family in the 1841 and 1851 censuses in Lambeth but does not appear after that. A Robert Jabez (or Faber or Taber, depending on which index you look at) arrived in Victoria on the Gloriana in December 1852. I think that's what the "52" on the labels means: it would be logical to label your possessions with your name and year of voyage if you were undertaking a journey to the other side of the world in the mid 19th century. I’m assuming the label would be handwritten with ink. S and T are very alike in handwriting of the time, and I think it was probably actually "R T Seldon '52". Robert's paternal grandmother was Elizabeth Taber - presumably that's where the name came from.

A newspaper article of the time says that "The face and head seemed dreadfully bruised, and one side of the same seemed to have received a gun shot wound, from which the blood was still oozing." We may never know what actually happened to poor Robert but I'm happy to pass on the research to a family member.

Australia / George Calder Henry GARDNER of Paynesville, Victoria
« on: Thursday 07 March 13 01:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm currently making up a family tree for my young nephews, who are descended from George Calder Henry GARDNER, born 1903 in Essendon, Victoria, son of Frederick GARDNER and Janet Elizabeth CALDER. He married Eileen in 1924 - the marriage registration in the Victorian Marriages index 1921-42 is listed twice, once with George's spouse as Aileen THACKRAH and again as Aileen SHACKRAH. In electoral rolls her given name is consistently Eileen. George and Eileen are buried at Paynesville Cemetery but the index only shows that they have a headstone, no details of the inscription. Their deaths do not appear in indexes up to 1985.

If I have to I'll buy the marriage certificate in order to find Eileen's family name, but maybe someone out there is connected to this family and can tell me when George and Eileen died and what her maiden name was? As usual I've left it to the last minute (planning to give it to them this weekend at a family function) so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

World War Two / Woman in uniform
« on: Thursday 06 December 12 07:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help with identifying the uniform in this photo? The lady in question was born in England in 1923 and emigrated to Australia in 1950. She has since passed on so we can't ask her, and we have absolutely no idea what the uniform is. I'm not even sure whether this is the right place to post this photo. Thanks.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Harold NAYLOR & Emily SELLERS
« on: Wednesday 14 November 12 04:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Does anyone have these two in their tree? I'm trying to find out where Harold was from and who his parents were. Here's what I know about them:

Harold NAYLOR was born around 1892, probably Yorkshire but could be elsewhere. He married Emily SELLERS in 1923 in Bradford. They had three known children in Dewsbury. Harold died on 16 December 1951 in Spen Valley. Administration of his estate was granted to his widow Emily in February 1952. His address on the probate calendar was 1 Balme Road, Cleckheaton.

Emily SELLERS was born on 31 January 1896, daughter of Joseph, a plasterer, and Sarah. I've found her in both 1901 and 1911 censuses in Balm Road, Cleckheaton. She died on 29 April 1969 and is buried in the family plot in the New Cemetery, Cleckheaton.

There are many possible Harold Naylor entries in censuses and the GRO index but without knowing his parents or birthplace I can't pinpoint the right one. Same with the military and parish records at Ancestry. I've been in touch with members of the family but no-one I've spoken to knows anything more about Harold. I can't justify the expense of the marriage and death certs from England (I'm in Australia) at this stage, so I thought I'd try good old Rootschat and the knowledgeable people therein. Thanks...

Leicestershire / Leicestershire burials: Kemp, Robinson
« on: Thursday 13 September 12 09:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Does anyone out there have access to the Leicestershire & Rutland Burial Index? I'm trying to find information about KEMP and ROBINSON families. I'm in Australia and not likely to get to a Leicestershire records office anytime soon. I checked our State Library but they only have very limited microfiche for burials.

The KEMP family I'm interested in date from about the 1820s and lived mostly around Syston and in Leicester itself. The ROBINSONs are more recent and also lived in Leicester - I believe the family was originally from Yorkshire.

Any information will be helpful - thanks lots.

Australia / John Henry WALL, Northern Territory
« on: Wednesday 22 August 12 02:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm trying to find information about someone who is believed to have died in Alice Springs some years ago and not having much luck. There's not a lot of NT info about.

He was John Henry WALL, born 16 December 1912 in Oldham, Lancashire, England, son of John Henry WALL and Sarah LEES. He married Emma COOPER in 1937 in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. He was demobbed by the Royal Navy in Australia (Service No.: C/MX 97850 - there is a file at the National Archives of Australia relating to this, dated 1945, but it's not yet been digitised). His wife and daughter joined him but Jack and Emma later separated. Their daughter stayed with Emma and it's believed that Jack met someone else and had a son, and died in Alice Springs in the late 1900s.

Jack didn't maintain contact with his siblings in England, who have now all passed on. My cousin's wife, of the next generation, is curious about what happened to her Uncle Jack and wondered if I could help. I've tried all the usual avenues but the only thing I could find was the above record at the NAA. Any suggestions on what to try next would be very welcome... thanks.

Australia / Index to Victorian Goldfields Hospitals' Admissions
« on: Monday 09 July 12 09:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a copy of this excellent CD but the last time I used it was on a PC with Windows XP. I now have a laptop running Vista and although I've uninstalled and re-installed I cannot make it work with Vista. It installs fine, and then I do the search, also fine, but when I click on View Results I get this error message:

[Microsoft] [ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified

The computer running XP has long since gone to God and I'm stumped. Does anyone have a fix for this?

The name I'm looking for is Grigsby/Grigsbey.

Thanks!

Australia / Miss Ethel V MERRICK, "Tani", Hurstville, NSW
« on: Wednesday 23 May 12 08:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a family member who won a Military Cross in WW1. He returned to Australia in June 1919, never married, and died in 1976. In his service record at The National Archives there are two letters from Miss Ethel V Merrick, whose address was "Tani" (or possible "Tain" - hard to tell), Queen's Road, Hurstville, NSW. One is dated January 1918 and the other April 1919. She expresses anxiety about his whereabouts because she's had  no reply to her letters and she'd heard he was home but hasn't heard from him.

The only Ethel V Merrick I've been able to find was born in Wagga Wagga in 1889, mother Mary J, no father's name. Does anyone know anything about Ethel, her mother Mary J, or the house in Hurstville? Ethel doesn't appear in electoral rolls or marriage/death indexes (at least not with her middle initial). My MC winner seems to have lived a solitary sort of life but Ethel obviously meant something to him and I'd like to know more about her.

Thanks!
