Yorkshire (West Riding) / Arthur HAMPSHIRE
« on: Sunday 11 December 11 03:50 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know anything about Arthur HAMPSHIRE? He married Constance MOORE in 1941 in Keighley. In the December quarter of 1946 Connie married Harry RICHARDSON and they later moved to Australia.

Somerset / Charles Wyndham Tawell COLMAN
« on: Sunday 27 November 11 08:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a photograph of this man as a little lad, probably about three or four years old, taken by A G Petherick in Taunton, Somerset. Further research shows that Charles was born in Taunton in 1896, went to Epsom public school, and served in WW1 in the Coldstream Guards and the RFC. He married Annie Jacklin in the late 1920s - I haven't been able to find any children for them.

Charles' father was Walter Tawell (or Tavell) Colman, a surgeon, and his mother was Minna Braid, who I believe was the daughter of a surgeon. Walter and Minna married in London in 1878.

Does anyone have this family in their tree? I would love to know more about Charles, and am happy to send a scan of the photo to anyone who is interested.

Hi all,
I found a wedding photo at a trash and treasure market today. When I lifted the backing paper I was delighted to see a very detailed description of the people in the photo:

Mr and Mrs William Vincent Dalton
nee Anne Therese Milne
St Ambrose Church, Sydney Road, Brunswick
January 11th 1933
Best man Dr James G Dalton
Groomsman Mr Joseph P Milne
Bridesmaids Miss K Welsh, Miss M Milne
Mr Alexander Milne, senior

Happy to post to a family member.

Australia / All Saints Church, Lawrence, Harwood Island: PARSONS
« on: Saturday 05 November 11 07:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, I bought a marriage certificate recently for Robert Roe KENNEDY and Martha PARSONS who married in January 1886 at this church. It turned out to be one of the nearly-useless ones with very basic information. Robert was a widower (first wife Mary Ann LEESON d. 1880). I have a fair bit of information on Robert - his parents, marriage in Dublin, arrival in Aus from Ireland, death (result of accident), children etc.

All this cert says about Martha PARSONS is her name, spinster status, occupation domestic, UR Harwood Island. No age, no parents, nothing that can help me identify her after Robert's death in 1893. His death cert lists her as his second wife and does not say she is deceased. There were no children of the marriage. Son William from the first marriage was the informant.

Apparently these brick wall certs can be worked around, other helpful Rootschatters have told me, by going to the original church records. Does anyone know where they would be held? I've tried online searches with no luck. Should I write direct to the church, if it still exists? I'm in Victoria and know very little about the area. I believe Harwood Island was important in the local sugar industry. There quite a few PARSONS BMDs in the Clarence-Ulmarra-Maclean area but I can't link Martha to any of them.

Thank you all!

Australia / HODSON of Bathurst, NSW
« on: Sunday 09 October 11 05:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm trying to find the forebears of Alfred HODSON (1851-1932). His parents according to the death index were James and Ann. Several trees at Ancestry say that Ann is Ann PENNINGTON, probably because that is the only marriage for a James HODSON and Ann anybody in the entire index (1831). Further research shows that Ann Pennington was actually born Ann STIRRUP in 1874, so she can't have been having children in 1851!

I have Alfred's descendants but cannot find anything about his parents, their deaths or arrival in Aus. I plan to order Alfred's marriage certificate when finances permit (1873 to Elizabeth HUTCHIN nee HARRIS) but Rootschatters have always been very helpful, so I thought I'd try here first.

Many thanks...

Australia / Richard HAMPTON: murder/manslaughter
« on: Thursday 29 September 11 08:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Richard HAMPTON died on 22 April 1852, drowned in the Shoalhaven River in NSW. John SIMMS was indicted for his murder or manslaughter but the evidence was not sufficient and he was discharged, not guilty. There are reports in several newspapers of the incident and the indictment (June that year).

I would really like to buy a copy of Richard's death certificate because I suspect he belongs in my family tree - there are no other details in newspaper reports of his death, not even his age. BUT there is no death registration for him in NSW - I've searched for every possible variation of HAMPTON in a wide year range and even just for Richard, no surname, registered 1852 or 1853. I know that many life events weren't registered at that time but I would have thought that one that appeared in newspapers, and obviously went through some sort of legal process, would have been registered.

Can anyone shed any light on Richard and/or why there is no death registration?

Thanks lots.

Europe / POLI family of Pisa, Tuscany, Italy
« on: Thursday 31 March 11 09:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm making enquiries on behalf of my sister-in-law Eliana, who is curious about her Italian family. Her father was Afro Fausto POLI (1902-1988), born in Pisa. He was an opera singer (baritone). Eliana’s mother was Cavell Florence ARMSTRONG (1932-2010). She was also an opera singer and her stage name was Gloria Cervi. Eliana knows that her father had several brothers and sisters but is not sure of their names. Afro's parents were Ettore POLI (1878-1944) and Santa GAMBOGI (1884-1923).

Afro POLI was first married to Rina Maria LUPARINI. They had a son named (*). Eliana believes that (*) had three children. Afro and Rina divorced and he married Cavell in Australia, where they lived from the early 1970s. Afro died while on a visit to Italy in 1988. (By the way, does anyone know how to go about getting a death certificate from Italy? He was still an Italian citizen.)

Eliana would love to know about her Italian heritage so she can pass it on to her three children. If anyone knows anything about the POLI family of Pisa we'd love to hear from you. Thanks.

United States of America / Social Security application from 1945
« on: Friday 07 January 11 03:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, after many letters and a long wait (I'm in Australia) I finally have a copy of an ancestor's original USA Social Security application. The handwriting is clear enough to read but my problem is the text underneath - I can't make out all of the fields. For instance, one field has a name in it that I don't recognise, and I don't know whether this is the name of her employer or a next of kin or what, because the printed text is so small and blurred. Some of it I can guess because I already know her parents' names etc., but it would be really useful to know what the other fields are. Ancestry used to have clean versions of census forms etc. so you could decipher what the column headings were on returns, but I haven't been able to find one for an SS application from 1945. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / George Robinson d. 1938 Leicester
« on: Wednesday 09 June 10 04:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm trying to help my cousin find out something about his mysterious grandfather. All we know is that his name was George Robinson and he died in about 1938, probably of influenza. We don't believe he had a middle name and he may have come from Yorkshire. Searching the birth indexes has narrowed the field to a GR whose death was registered in the March quarter of 1938, aged 44, in Leicester.

I'm in Australia and my previous experience of English death certificates has prompted me to ask around first because there's not a lot of information on the certs. His surviving children don't want to talk about him (he was apparently already married when he took up with their mother, and it seems he didn't marry her although he did leave his wife) but the next generation would like to know something about him. Maybe somebody has come across his burial in their travels? I don't know where to start in Leicester but if I knew where he was buried I could contact the cemetery/crematorium and maybe find more information which might help me locate his family in censuses.

Thanks!
