Armed Forces / Re: 83rd Regiment of Foot

Hi Sue,
re James Rowland; he was my 3xgreat grandfather. ai know he was married twice, Elizabeth (1st) and then (H)Annah Mabbs, but I don't have any knowledge of a third. Through a distant cousin I also have the story that James was born in Wales but my version puts him in Monmouthshire (England) in the small village of Llantilio Grosseny. Again no definite proof. With his second wife Hannah he had 6 children.
Regards

I have been researching back in the family and have come across a member who was in the 83rd Regiment of Foot.   He was born in 1763 in Wales, although this is not confirmed.    I am wondering how he came to be in an Irish Regiment when he was born in Wales.   I know he saw service and was wounded at Salamanca.

Is this a time when people came from Ireland and possibly joined the British Army and in their case joined an Irish Regiment.   I believe the Regiment may have been based in Dublin but not entirely sure - all children as far as I know were born in Essex, England.

Is there anywhere I can look up a member of this Regiment so far back.   He was James Rowland b 1763.

Sue

Cardiganshire Lookup Requests / Re: Esther Evans

Hi Arronroots,
Yes I do have Esther Evans marriage certificate and the witnesses are:-
Dan Davies   and   Thomas Evans   both could not write and therefore made their mark.
Her stated age is 22, spinster residing at Cwmclydach,Llangafelach. She had to make her mark as presumably she could not write.
That's about all I can glean from the certificate.
Many thanks,
Sirjasper.

Hi Arronroots,
Esther Evans married William Thomas 1873 in the Register Office Swansea district.
Census sheet refs. :- 1881.....RG11/5503 page 23
                                  1891....RG12/4414 page 10
                                  1901..William Thomas is shown as
                                            widower.
She was not consistent in age shown as 30 in 1881 and 37 in 1891 but birth place is consistent at Llanllwni.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Sirjasper
