Technical Help / Re: does anyone have a functioning Win95 computer?
« on: Tuesday 12 August 14 21:20 BST (UK)  »
Redroger thanks for clarifying the need for OS to operate inside Virtual Box.

So I've done a recce search on Ebay and there are a variety of Win95 OS cds on offer.  Dumb question time.  If I get a Win 95 install CD off ebay, won't my current Win 7 64bit set up have difficulty opening that or will the setup.exe type files launch via DOS and enable install on VirtualBox?

BTW I think I have to go to Win 95 over Win 98 just to be on the safe side.  The files were created in March 1998 but the CD cover says Win 3.1 or higher.

Hi Redroger
Many thanks for the very kind offer.   Will definitely consider and pm you if all else fails!
The old laptop I was thinking of, which ran WinXP, is now confirmed "deceased" so no help from that quarter.
I've been investigating online and considering installing Virtualbox but from what I understand I need a copy of the original OS to install into it?   Is that correct?

Hi all
I have inherited a CD made in 1998.   The setup file will not run on my current computer(64bit), and I cant open the file formats .SMT in current os Win 7.    I just want to convert the data files to .TXT format if at all possible.   All the file conversion sites I've tried so far will not work.  Any suggestions?

Hi scotiagirl

Not sure where you have checked previously, but this is a link to the British Columbia Archives online database for all provincial vital statistics, including deaths 1872-1991:

Hope this helps

possible clue

The National Library of Wales site has one will for John Jones, sawyer, of Brynbarrig, parish of  Ysceifiog, signed 1840, proved in 1850 (http://hdl.handle.net/10107/231972).   He mentions a total of six sons William, Ellis, Robert, John, Joseph and Thomas, and a daughter Mary.

Might be worth checking out further?

Hello Waen

The Robert Jones on the 1851 census reference you quoted is married to a Prudence Jones.  I tracked down the second marriage certificate (Jan 23 1860 Bodfari, Flintshire) which indicates that this Robert's father was an Abel Jones occupation labourer. :(

I agree 100 %.  There are givers and takers in this world, including relatives.  By nature I'm a giver, but I've come to recognize giving is what gives me pleasure - how the other person treats me gift is their problem!  Some people can be totally ungrateful but coming across the kindred spirits more than makes up for the horrid ones. ;)

PS   Several years ago, I met my 3rd cousin once removed through family history.  We've never met, live 7000 miles apart but we chat on the net once a week.  I think of her as the sister I never had.   Just like the rest of life, you never know where or when you will come across a toad or find a treasure!
