West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / McAlonan Casualties in WW1 from Broxburn Area
« on: Friday 23 October 15 14:14 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am trying to find a connection between some WW1 casualties by the name of McAlonan from around Broxburn.

I'll start with Agnes McAlonan who married Walter Heeps in Reddingmuirhead in 1914. Agnes had moved from Dalry in Ayrshire where her family settled when they arrived from Ballymena in County Antrim.
Walter Heeps was killed whilst serving with the Scots Guards on 25th January 1915.

Agnes McAlonan had a brother William who was born in Dalry and moved to around Broxburn following the deaths of his parents presumably to be near his sister. He was then employed as a miner in Fauldhouse. William was killed whilst serving with the Royal Field Artillery in 1916. His sister Agnes was his next of kin and her address is then given as Bankside Cottage, California.
Agnes McAlonan also had a nephew James McAlonan , also born in Dalry but enlisted Falkirk. He was killed near Arras in 1917 whilst serving with the Gordon Highlanders.
There is a Thomas McAlonan who died of pneumonia in a military hospital in France in 1917. Various pieces of information lead me to think that Thomas was related to the other McAlonans mentioned above but I cannot prove it. He came from Renfrew but prior to enlisting he was employed by Oakbank Oil Company at Winchburgh although he had married in Paisley in 1912. At the time of his death his widow and two children stayed at Greendykes Road, Broxburn.
If anyone can connect Thomas to the other McAlonans I would be extremely grateful,
Many thanks,
Baird

World War One / Army List of Personal Effects in WW1
« on: Sunday 11 October 15 15:31 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
This list of personal effects was recently brought to my attention and I was delighted to find my Great Uncle listed within as there is no sign of his service record.
My question is connected with 3 payments to his sister following his death in action 14th October 1916.

1. A payment of £17.4s. in December 1916 .

2. A further payment of 3s. 7d. in January 1917.

3. A War Gratuity of £12. 10s. on 15th August 1919

There is another Private from the same battalion ( 2nd Seaforth Highlanders)  killed on the same day who appears on the same page and receives the same War Gratuity on the same date in 1919. Other soldiers on the page receive smaller amounts , one of them in the 7th Seaforths who was killed two days earlier on the 12th October 1916.

What was the War Gratuity calculated on? Did Regulars receive more than Territorials?

Many thanks,
Baird

West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Broxburn War Memorial
« on: Friday 20 March 15 07:28 GMT (UK)  »
I recently visited Broxburn and was very surprised to find that the only war memorial was erected in 2010 . Was there a reason why a place of that size had no war memorial erected following WW1?
The only record I can find on line for a war memorial in the area is for Abercorn Church.

Tyrone / County Tyrone Place Name 1876
« on: Monday 16 March 15 11:39 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Scottish Birth Certificate from 1877 in Glasgow for a child born to Thomas McSorley and Mary Ann McSorley nee McFadyen.
It gives their date and place of marriage as February 1876 in County Tyrone . I cannot make out the place name or trace any place name  resembling it. However it looks like Astroe  or Artroe . I understand the place name would have been phonetic as neither parent could write.
I would appreciate any assistance in this matter.

Lanarkshire / Irregular Marriage at 79 Hutcheson Street, Glasgow
« on: Thursday 19 February 15 12:43 GMT (UK)  »
I have come across a wedding certificate showing an irregular Marriage by sherrifs warrant at 79 Hutcheson Street, Glasgow  on 31st December 1931. The marriage listed below it in the register is similar and on the same day.
What was at 79 Hutcheson Street? Was it a Registrars Office?

Antrim / German Salvation Army Commander William MacAlonan
« on: Thursday 04 December 14 10:23 GMT (UK)  »
I have an interest in the family name McAlonan (and variants) . Recently I was informed that a William MacAlonan was a Commander in the German Salvation Army up until the outbreak of the First World War when it is believed he returned to the U.K. He is credited with establishing the German operation .
My contact in Germany thinks this gentleman originally came from Ligoneil.
The McAlonans I am researching seem to originate from around the Ballymena area but I would be interested in any further info on Commander William MacAlonan.
I have recently received a family photograph Commander MacAlonan and family if anyone is interested in it I can scan and forward.

Regards,
Baird
