Warwickshire / St Cyprians Church & Webster & Horsfall, Open day Sat 10 Sept 2016.
« on: Wednesday 24 August 16 19:26 BST (UK)  »
St Cyprians Church Open day
10 September 2016
Time 12pm – 3pm

The Church is 150 years old this year.
The School Room , (Museum )will also be open.

Do you or your family have any memories of this  lovely  hidden  church?
Were. you or a family member baptised, confirmed or  married there?
Did you family work at  Webster and Horsefall  ?
Webster and Horsefall Museum (in school room) is open same date and time..

The Church and the Museum  need your memories and any photo's will be copied and returned.
Times have changed drastically since this beautiful church was built over a river at the end of a leafy lane, along with the factory it was the hub of Hay Mills to benefit the workers and their families.
I can't imagine it will survive another 150 years, but we intend to collate as much historic memories as we possible can .
If you can help we would be very grateful

Webster and Horsefall
The  first Transatlantic cable
1860 saw a marketplace for high-grade steel for oceanic telegraphy, specifically for the laying of thousands of miles of cables. The failure of the first Transatlantic cable due to inept business practices gave Webster & Horsfall the opportunity to help make the second attempt succeed. By 1865, the company had provided the necessary 1600 tons of crucible steel wire for the project, delivered within a tight twelve months. The loss of this cable within the final stages of laying realised a repeat order! This overall third attempt was successfully laid by Brunel's leviathan, the steamship Great Eastern, in just fourteen days!

Horsfall built houses and, in 1860, a schoolroom for his workers’ children. This was subsequently converted into a Chapel. The present school room which stands beside the church was built in 1863.

In 1895, the firm merged with Latch & Batchelor Ltd, wire rope manufacturers, and control of the combined business was not finally wrested back by the Horsfall family until 1948, when the Batchelor family interests were finally bought out. In 1955, the amalgamation of Webster & Horsfall with Latch & Batchelor ended.

Please light a candle
Monday 4 August: Time 10pm – 11pm  --Lights out  candles lit
The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.
Sir Edward Grey, Foreign Secretary, uttered these words on the eve of Britain officially entered the First World War. Exactly 100 years later we are inviting millions of individuals, households and companies to join together in a national moment of reflection. We're encouraging everyone in the UK to turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm on 4 August 2014 – leaving only a single light or candle for this symbolic act of reflection and hope.
