The Common Room / 1911 Census query - no birth/death record of sheppard child
« on: Saturday 01 January 11 15:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

Here's a real puzzler for you to kick off 2011.

On the 1911 census for Charles and Elizabeth Sheppard living in Bristol, with 7 children named on the form but but along a column or two it is recorded that of the 7 children born, 6 were still living and 1 had died.  How come there is 7 children listed on the census?  We had thought the young 5 day old boy John Sheppard had died (listed last and with a red line drawn through), but we cannot find any birth let alone a death for the lad !  All the children were listed as being born in Bristol.

At the bottom of the page it states that there were 4 males and 4 females in the household, so who died?

Any help would be appreciated.

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Stafford / TIMMONS / LONG - TREALOW CEMETERY
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 15:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi folks,

I appreciate that several years have passed since some kind souls offered to check up the burial index for Trealow cemetery, but I Will ask anyway (here's hoping).

We have just discovered after several years of research that some of our ancestors, on the Stafford, Timmons and Long lineages were born, married and died in Glamorgan.  Some we knew were married there (Tonypandy,Pontypridd), but it has only came to light that Peter Stafford, Catherine Ellen Stafford (husband and wife and their child, Margaret Bridget Stafford aged 5 were buried at Trealow).

As we don't live in the area, we would be grateful if anyone could check the index for burial plot No's etc for the Staffords named above (and if its possible, check the index for any other Stafford's - probably relatives).

Any help on tracing the Timmons' and Long's in same cemetery would be greatly appreciated.

Much obliged for any assistance offered.

Best wishes to all,

Jane and Kenny

Scotland / The History of the Family Dallas
« on: Friday 24 September 10 20:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

If anyone has a connection with the Scottish surname DALLAS (which was spelt in about 20 different ways through the years), please let me know as I have recently purchased a rare old tomb of a book by JAMES DALLAS dated 1921 which sets out the ancestral history of the family back to the 12th century - all fully researched and documented.

Since the book was written sometime between 1910-1921 (I understand it was published after his death), it doesn't have much in the way of modern (20th century) records.  If you have any look up requests about any particular Dallas' - especially those from Nairn, Inverness and the Scottish North East, please leave a message and I will have a look.

The Common Room / maritime research
« on: Friday 20 August 10 22:17 BST (UK)  »
If anyone has UK based ancestors who were master mariners or mariners mates, you may find a trip to the national maritime museum of interest.  A good first step would be checking out their website at http://www.nmm.ac.uk/researchers/family-history-research/

If you don't want or cant get to London, you can always email the museum through the above site and within a few days (providing you identify what your interest is) you will get a full and helpful written reply.  If you know named personnel who were master mariners, the museum's archive Library should hold a treasure trove of information, especially if your ancestor sailed the seas after 1840.  Everything relative to one individual is collated together into certificate numbers.  If a London visit isn't convenient and you can provide the relative information to enable an archivist to track down a certificate number, you can order digital scanned copies of everything for the sum of £25, plus £2 postage.  It doesn't sound cheap, but it saves on a trip / travel expense and searching the library for something that can be done for you.

One thing to remember if you do go to the museum - they prohibit you from taking photocopies as the material they have is not for messing about with.  They do allow you to take non flash photography at times (but only under strict supervision).

On the whole, for maritime records, if they are of interest to you, ordering them online / following email contact is by far the best method of obtaining a very interesting insight into the past...

Have a look at the NMM website and happy researching.

One last piece of potentially useful guidance - google Lloyd's Shipping Registers and the name of your ancestors, to see if there are any online editions of the old registers (some do exist in full like the 1830 and 1839 editions).  These were published yearly and contain a wealth of information such as names of ships, their tonnage, who the master was, when and where the ship was built, who owned it, where it sailed to and from... etc.

Anyway, have a look and see what you might find.

Regards

Wexford / Adamstown tombstone look up request
« on: Tuesday 03 August 10 20:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

We have just unearthed some information regarding our Stafford lineage and wonder if anyone has access to and knows of information available covering burials that would have been recorded between 1901 and 1911 most likely taking place in Adamstown.

Bridget Stafford, wife of James Stafford is listed on the 1901 census aged 46, but by 1911 she must have died as we have found James on the 1911 census listed as being a widower.

We would greatly appreciate any help some kind soul can offer in terms of confirming or helping to confirm where and when Bridget died.

Thanks in advance,

Jane and Kenny.
