Lanarkshire / Matthew Hislop - No - Heslehurst
« on: Monday 08 September 08 00:57 BST (UK)  »
This is no co-incidence , these fellows both changed their names to Hislop.
I was aware of another Heslehurst marriage  recorded in  Glasgow - Matthew Heslehurst , Nailer in Calton + Janet Harrower in the parish of Calton married 5 th Feb by the Rev John Barr. I wondered what , if any , the connection was to my G G Grandfather Richard Hislop / Heslehurst.
I checked to see if there was a marriage between a Matthew HISLOP and a Janet Harrower and there was!
Matthew Hislop of Barony parish, Glasgow and Janet Harrower of this parish recorded their names on the 17 January and were married on the 3 rd Feb 1818.
This younger brother of my GG Grandfather did the same thing. I believe they were trying to escape the requirement of being available for militia duty.
No respect for the family researchers of the future , I say!

Lanarkshire / Richard Hislop - NO -Richard Hesslehurst
« on: Sunday 07 September 08 00:11 BST (UK)  »
A Brickwall Knocked Over!
I have discovered that my G G Grandfather , known to all of his family as Richard Hyslop / Hislop ( a Blacksmith / Nailer in Calton) was actually born in 1777 as Richard Heslehurst in Stockton on Tees to John Heslehurst  ( also a Nailer)and Elizabeth Smith.
When I began this search , I was aware of a family story about a change of name from Haslehurst / Heslehurst - whichever spelling, but did not know where this fitted in.
Working back from people I knew , I got to my G G Grandparents , Richard Hislop + Isabella Hardie but there is no marriage registered. There is , however , a union between Richard Hesslehurst and Isabella Hardie ( married June 1799) but I couldn`t just claim that.
When the OPR s were available to view , I found that Richard Hesslehurst was "a soldier in the North York Militia "and subsequent research tells me that that militia was involved in delivering prisoners from the war with the French to Edinburgh Castle so this places Richard in Glasgow for the time leading to the marriage in 1799.
I am now in contact with Heslehurst researchers in Yorkshire , Australia and New Zealand who had a Richard Heslehurst who married Isabella Hardie and then lost track of him.
It is difficult to find folk who didn`t want to be found.  I presume Richard decided to cease militia duty and live in Glasgow as a blacksmith - his families` trade )Of eleven children born to this couple , only one birth ( Janet , their third child ) is registered - maybe a doctor had to attend this birth ?? I found out about the others because Isabella Hislop died in 1855 and the amount of information provided in that year only , gave me the rest of the children. How lucky was that!
So just keep chipping away at those brick walls - there is information out there somewhere.
                 Happy Hunting , Thommoje

Lanarkshire / Richard Hislop - Great Hamilton Street
« on: Saturday 09 February 08 02:14 GMT (UK)  »

I have found from Pigots Commercial Directory for 1825 -6 , my G G Grandfather , Richard Hislop , ( spelt Heslop as this was an English publication ) , Nailmaker , smith.  Address : 5 Great Hamilton Street & Nhsp ; Town, Glasgow.
Can anybody tell me where Gt Hamilton Street was and / or what Nhsp or Nbsb means in that record.
This family lived in the Calton and Kelvin area over a long period during the 1800 s so I expect it was there somewhere.
                                  Regards, Thommoje

Argyllshire / Inverary & the Dukes of Argyll
« on: Friday 30 November 07 02:19 GMT (UK)  »

 Hello Argyll Researchers,
My family connection - Purdie , Greig , Morrison , Walls , Fogo , Buntain , Thom -  from around Inverary  lead me to purchase a book called " Inverary and the Dukes of Argyll" by Ian G Lindsay and Mary Cosh. A family story existed that one of our ancestors worked for the Duke of Argyll.
My research suggested that this was most likely to be David Greig who married Elizabeth Walls at Glen Shira in 1784. ( a previous post about GGG Grandparents` Marriage Venue covered that ) David Greig was listed as an Overseer as was his son William , born 1785. The " Who Owns Scotland " site tells me that Glen Shira is part of the Estate of The Dukes of Argyll. It seemed likely that David Greig probably worked on the Estate - but Genealogy without documentation is just mythology , somebody said.
The book Inverary & the D----- --  has a list of Architects and Craftsmen in it and I found my David Greig listed there. Among other things about him , it tells me that a " new  thatched house was provided for him in Glen Shira farm court " in 1786. So , apart from William 1785 , all of his family who were listed as being born in Glen Shira were likely born in that house and lived on the estate.
I would be happy to check for other names if anyone thinks their family may be mentioned among the architects and craftsmen and access to the book is not available to you.

Argyllshire / GGG Grandparents Marriage Venue
« on: Friday 24 August 07 09:19 BST (UK)  »

  Hello Argyll Roots Chatters,
I have found the marriage record of my GGG Grandparents , David Greig and Elizabeth Walls on 21 Dec 1784.
It reads " booked 5 th Dec and married  at Glen ?????  the 21 st Dec 1784.
I am unable to decipher the name of the place. If anyone is able to look, I would love to hear what your educated guess is  or could anybody who is familiar with the area around Inverary suggest what this Glen  - - -   place might be.
It is a bit difficult to get that kind of detail from here in Australia so any help would be most welcome .
I note with interest that all other marriages on that page just state that the marriage was booked but don`t give a venue for the event. Could this have been  a country house , a village , ???
Look forward to hearing from anyone who can shed some light, Regards, Thommoje

Aberdeenshire / GLASS FAMILY
« on: Friday 03 August 07 00:03 BST (UK)  »

Joseph Rae Glass ( 1871 - 1941) and his wife Janet (Rae) Glass ( 1873 - 1950) lived out their lives in Aberdeen, having moved from Glasgow. Their children , Thomas 1902 and Margaret 1904 were born in Glasgow. I know there was also a Samuel , but have no detail.
An old letter found among some photos suggests that there may have been some other "wee Glasses ".
Joseph , Uncle Joe , was the younger brother of my Grandmother ( Eilzabeth Glass  / Hislop ) and I wonder if there are any remaining members of that family in Aberdeenshire.
Joseph Glass and " Jenny" , his wife lived at 10 Northfield Place and  a daughter Sarah King ( who signed her mothers death registration ) lved nearby at 24 Esslemont Avenue.
I would love to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of this family,
                                      Regards, Thommoje

Durham / Engineer ( E & M )
« on: Monday 02 July 07 02:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi Roots Chatters , I have come across a couple of male relatives listed in the 1881 census with Engineer (E & M) as their occupation.
Does anybody know if this was a reference to some particular company or whatever else? This appears in Durham and Lancashire census records.
Hope somebody can shed some light, Regards, Thommoje

Scotland / Photos of Anywhere in Scotland
« on: Tuesday 29 May 07 07:14 BST (UK)  »

I would like everyone who , like myself, lives in the far flung corners of the World to look at this site.

You can search the name of any place, however small and see photos of the area where your ancestors lived.

It is called  "Geograph British Isles " and is well worth the look

                                          Enjoy, Thommoje

Perthshire / Achray House
« on: Tuesday 29 May 07 07:05 BST (UK)  »

Hi Perthshire Chatters, Dopey me  ! I posted this in the wrong county.
 I shall try again.
I have a family member who worked at Achray House (1881 Census) as a domestic servant. This Mary Burgess McKay subsequently married John Anderson , a gamekeeper from Callender.
I was just curious about Achray House and its history. Does anyone know about it
                                                        Regards, Jean
