Stirlingshire / Achray House
« on: Monday 28 May 07 09:45 BST (UK)  »

Hello Stirlingshire Chatters, I have a family member who worked at Achray House, as a domestic servant.
Her name was Mary Burgess McKay and she subsequently married John Anderson who was a game- keeper there.
He lived in Callender and she lived at Achray House.
Can anyone tell me whose home this was?
                                  Regards, Thommoje

Lanarkshire / HISLOP - Glasgow - Blacksmiths and Printers
« on: Saturday 26 May 07 05:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello RootsChatters,
I am still searching for more modern day connections with my Hislop Family.
From the early 1800`s to the middle of the century at least, most of the menfolk worked as Blacksmiths, iron founders and associated  endeavours.
A transition then took place and quite a few of the men were involved in the printing industry in Glasgow ( with William Collins & Co ) and also in London. Some others were involved in the Insurance Industry , again in Glasgow and also in Manchester and Liverpool.
Some of the family members ventured out on their own as Paper manufacturers and paper rulers, still working with the printing game.
Richard Hislop, Thomas Hislop ( several of each), Samuel , John and David are some of the more common name throughout the 18oo`s.The Reid family were the Insurance brokers.
Unfortunately. for me, the trail then goes cold around the time that access to records also comes to an end.
I would love to hear from anyone out there who thinks they may be associated with any of these folk,
                                        Thommoje

Argyllshire / John and Alexander Purdie Update
« on: Friday 23 February 07 22:55 GMT (UK)  »

To those who were following my search for detail about  Alexander Purdie ( all three)  , Mary Morrison and John Purdie and Rockburn cottage..  I have found an item in the Edinburgh Gazette about the sequestration of Alexander 1820 Purdie`s estate which tells me  the hotel that Alexander ran was in Ardrishaig , so I figure Rockburn cottage was also.
Mary Morrison was already deceased by 1854  as Alexander 1847 and  John 1849 had to have adult representatives in court as they were the only beneficiaries ( as 5 and 7 year olds) of Alexander`s estate.

Argyllshire / Deaths in Inverary
« on: Wednesday 24 January 07 00:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Argyll Researchers,
My Great Grandfather Alexander Purdie died in Inverary in 1854 ( testament dealt with in Dunoon Sheriff`s Court).
His wife Mary ( m.s. Morrison) and his Mother , Janet Purdie were listed on the 1851 census but I can find no trace of them after that.
It is possible that they both died between 1851 census and the keeping of official records in 1855. Is it possible for somebody to check on deaths for Inverary during that period, please.

Argyllshire / Argyll Arms and Rockburn Cottage
« on: Friday 19 January 07 22:34 GMT (UK)  »

I am still searching for clues about Alexander Purdie and Mary Morrison who ran the Argyll Arms in Inverary from 1851.
Alexander 1820, died young in 1854 and in the testament of the estate, mention is made of Rockburn Cottage where he obviously lived. Do either of these buildings survive today?
As I live in Australia, it`s a bit difficult to pop over for a look. Mary must also have died young, I think.
Any info. would be so welcome, Regards, Jean

Lanarkshire / Marriages in Scotland against the Law
« on: Tuesday 28 November 06 07:40 GMT (UK)  »

Can anybody shed some light here? My Grandfather was married to Mary Annie and they had five sons. She died from complications following the birth of the fifth boy. this left him with 5 boys under ten to rear and a job to do.
He asked his wife`s sister to come and live in the house and look after the boys. After a couple of years, they decided to marry but , the story goes , that was against the law.
They overcame this by taking the ferry to Norway and they married in Kristiansaand.
Does anyone know more about a law forbidding a man marrying his wife`s sister?

« on: Monday 20 November 06 06:09 GMT (UK)  »

I believe I have located some family members in the Parish of Chalmers - not seen this before - where is it?
My modern day map of Glasgow gives Chalmers Court , Chalmers Place , Chalmers Gate and Chalmers Street in the centre of Calton.
Was this once called Chalmers Parish?
Needing confirmation or otherwise, Regards, Thommoje ??? ???
