 Hi Carol,
A friend of mine ( about to turn 90 ) is of your family. She is Daphne Lorna Lawlor - daughter of William Godfrey Massey Lawlor + Muriel Erhar(d)t.
Daphne was married to George Faithfull ( who died a couple of years ago).
She would love to know what you have found about  her Lawlor family .
                         Hope to hear from you,

World War One / Military Records FREE at " Find My Past " 22 - 26 April
« on: Sunday 21 April 13 06:25 BST (UK)  »

Military Records will be available to search , free of charge , at Find My Past  22 - 26 April.

A wonderful chance to search through the records for your soldier relatives , especially if you are not sure of exact details. Remember , if your relative was killed in action, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site is also free and may / maynot  give more clues.

Medal Card records are likely to be found  but Service records are a lot less likely as most were burnt as a result of WW2 bombings in London - less than 30% survive , but you can be lucky.

World War One / Ist Battalion , Black Watch ( Royal Highlanders ) War Diary
« on: Thursday 11 April 13 23:37 BST (UK)  »

 Hi Roots Chatters,
I have a copy of the above mentioned War Diary which dates from 1 Sept 1916 to  19 April 1919. After the Armistice was signed, the 1st Black Watch, a Regular Army battalion, marched into Germany ( to Roisdorf ) as an occupation force so they did not return to British soil till 19 April.
If anyone is interested, I could list all the places mentioned in the diary if you are wondering where your relatives spent their time in France.
The diary also lists men who served in this Battalion.

Dunbartonshire / SINGERS :Atkinson, Chalmers, Hislop , King , Boyd , McMurray
« on: Wednesday 20 March 13 02:25 GMT (UK)  »

 Hi Roots Chatters,
A large branch of my Dad`s HISLOP family lived and worked in the Clydebank area from about 1900 onwards. Many of them worked at Singers Factory as did so many.Family names include :- Atkinson , Chalmers , Hislop , King , Boyd and McMurray. These folk were the extended family of Archibald Hislop + Emily Kerr who married in 1871 in Glasgow.
I have not been able to establish contact with anyone from this branch of my family but BMD indexes tell me that this family group lived in the area until at least the late 1990 s.
Some of the street names where they lived were BLUEVALE , RIDDELL , THOMSON , RADNOR and SECOND TCE.
Would love to hear from anyone who has knowledge of or connections to this family,
                                                                    Thommoje

Aberdeenshire / Re: Thomas Glass + Catherine Mitchell
« on: Thursday 27 December 12 21:17 GMT (UK)  »

    Hi ,
There was some Glass family connection in Aberdeen but I am still trying to solve that mystery. All I know for sure is  Joseph Rae Glass + Janet ( Jenny ) Rae married in Glasgow 10 Oct 1900 - moved to Aberdeen between 1905 and 1910 and lived out their lives there -Gt Uncle Joseph died in June 1941 and Gt Aunt Jenny died in Dec 1950.
Children that I know of were:- Thomas Glass 1902 who married Catherine Mitchell ; Mary Margaret  Glass1904 who married Alexander Geddes ; Samuel : Margaret Rae Glass 1910 may have married James Gibb Neill : Sarah Gillespie Glass 1907 who married Alexander King.
We may have a connection  - let me know if you find one.

Hi Iain2,
The site is FreeCen - just Google it. I believe they have now covered all / most of Scotand for the 1841 Census and some of the 1851. You may get lucky with other places ( including England ) - just try and see if you get a result.
In the case of Inveraray , for example it is all there and you can go up and down a street to see who else lived in the adjoining houses. It`s fun and can be rewarding and also time consuming.
I find it best to put in less info rather than more and wade through the names :_ eg  1841   John Morrison   and click " male " . If there are too many names, you may have to narrow your search by adding a County .
The site is asit says - FREE.
               Have fun, Thommoje

« on: Monday 21 May 12 02:58 BST (UK)  »

 Hi Suds,
My Dad served in the Black Watch ( Royal Highlanders) in WW1 and I have a photo of him in his Battalion taken at Kynesham. Photographer - F M Orchard. This was obviously where they underwent basic training before being sent overseas.
You should be able to find him on the National Archives site under Military. They have the soldiers` Medal Cards available in their Documents Online section. You should be able to download a copy for a couple of Quid.
               Regards, Thommoje
