I finally sent off Ancestry DNA tests for my husband and me..

I had to set up a separate account for my husband  and now have the results back for both tests…

I have a worldwide sub how do I link his account to mine so that I can manage it, can I then view the matched trees from his test results?

I have our extensive full trees offline as well as some but not all on Ancestry, I have managed to check some of the public trees with no problem and some of the user names are tantalising with small private trees.

Both our results place  us very firmly English / Scottish with a bit of Viking.. OH has the expected Irish link but not as much as we thought. I have none! So I’m deducing my small Irish connections are Scots/Irish.  We can’t believe there is absolutely nothing outside UK/Ireland/Scandinavia.

Thanks… Jenny

The Common Room / Familysearch changes!
« on: Wednesday 01 September 21 08:29 BST (UK)  »
I logged into Familysearch last week and was able to search "records" in the usual way, this morning I logged in again and I'm not able to see the "map" and select country and go from there.
Now it gives me a completely different home page which, I feel isn't enough for a detailed search.

Probably ok if you have never used the site before but when you are used to the old way of searching  :o

I haven't tried the catalogue yet. Fingers crossed they haven't tampered with that too!

The Common Room / William Parsons
« on: Saturday 14 November 20 22:09 GMT (UK)  »
I'm going round and round in circles and clearly missing something  >:(

I have William Parsons born c 1893
married18 Mar 1922 at Newport Registry Office to Catherine Munro. age 28, coal hewer living at 36 Robert Street Newport father William Parsons (dec'd) also a coal hewer.
Witnesses  Alfred Charles Fairfax and Elizabeth Jones

1939 Elizabeth Jones widow is living at 36 Robert street, I'm quessing she is his landlady. Alfred Charles Fairfax married someone called Pring (a Pring family live next door in Robert Street). I don't think William Parsons is related to either of the witnesses.

fast forward to 1939 William and Catherine are living in Abbots Langley nr Watford Herts, with their children (all deceased now). He is a crane driver. (dob 27 Feb 1893)

William died in Dec qtr 1955 in Watford aged 62.

I can't find him pre his wedding, with his family!

I think I have found his medal card and pension ledger unfortunately I don't have access to Fold3 to see if it gives any further information, like birth place.
but not 100%  reg  numbers  21970, 1408; Grenadier Guards / machine gun corps

Can anyone give me any pointers on where to look next?
Thanks for taking time to read and hoepfully give some input.

World War One / Is there any other info I can find? (a hard one!)
« on: Tuesday 03 November 20 13:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,  :)

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction... maybe some Military records can shed some light on where he was born. fingers crossed!

I have the marriage certificate for the following man.

9 Aug 1919 at the RO Winchester.
Edward Charles Smith age 21 Bombardier RGA #56077 father James Smith, building contractor

now I have found his medal card stating he was a gunner.  I've looked on Ancestry and Findmypast for a service record but so far nothing.

He starts having children in (that I know of!)) in 1921 Greenwich
by 1925 he is with his wife in Devon and another 7 children follow
his wife died in 1935
1939 the children are in Dr Barnardo's Home in Cambridgeshire

I don't know what happened to Edward Charles Smith after the last child was born, and I'm hoping something in his military records might prove who he was.

Of course he might also have still been in the army after 1920 which would hamper the search :(

My cousin's husband has asked my to see what I can find

thanks in advance
Jenny

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Frederick George Fennell - help please
« on: Thursday 01 October 20 17:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
I need some help please with the above gentleman. Where did he come from and where did he go?

Frederick George Fennell appears in my tree when he marries a widow, Alice Brown (maiden name  Swan),  28 Jan 1918 All Saints Portsea, He is age  25 leading Rate in the R.N. father down as John Henry Fennell a Hairdresser.
her address is 5 Gladstone Street .
Witnesses don't appear to be any connection

According to his Naval records he enlisted 1914
"Having already seen six years service in the Navy previous to the outbreak of War in August 1914, he was immediately mobilised and engaged on important patrol duties in the Straits of Dover. He rendered valuable service during the course of hostilities and in 1920 was serving in China. He holds the 1914-1915 star and the General service and victory medals
address 5 Gladstone Street Mile End, Landport"

Rank:   Cook
Regiment:   H.M.S. "Mohawk" and "Tergemont"
Section:   Section X, Portsmouth

closest Possibilities
1901  RG13; Piece: 993; Folio: 103; Page: 6 ed 12 RD Portsmouth
there is a Frederick Fennell in Portsmouth with his parents WILLIAM HENRY FENNELL a hairdresser born c1895 Portsmouth  but he is 3 years younger than I was expecting

1911 RG14; Piece: 5520
there is a George WILLIAM Frederick Fennell age 20 at HMS Excellence Gunnery School in Portsmouth  R.N. Cook. his birth place is Battersea.
I followed him back but his father is completely wrong and all evidence points to him marrying someone else.

Is My Frederick George Fennell the same one as in 1901 and if so where did he go?

Fredrick George Fennell and Alice had one daughter N.P. in 1919

1939  Fareham
Alice Fennell is stating she is married and living with her daughter and 3 others (all closed)
no sign of her husband

There are 6 other Fennell children with mmn Swan in Bristol but that doesn't really add up either.

Alice Fennell died sep 1983 Portsmouth

Any help to try to unravel Alice's husband would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Jenny
