Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: 1901 Cenus Lookup Please
« on: Saturday 07 June 08 06:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi again

There is an Elizabeth Braxton living with her brother-in-law in Ealing. She is aged 26 but is shown as single which is a problem. The head of house is Robert Hallett and his wife is Olivia   The address is 6 Castle Hill Parade, Ealing. Olivia and Elizabeth were born in Maidenhead, Berkshire. I can't make out the occupation but it is probably dress maker. RG13, 1191, 5, 1

There is only one other Elizabeth Braxton in London but she is married to Henry.

There is a William Braxton, servant, aged 33, born St Pancras, in the 1901 census.

His occupation appears to be "barman's assistant". He is married. He is resident at 21 James Street, London. (St Martin in the Fields).

Unfortunately although married, his wife is not listed at the same address. Other parties are Audley Ashber (head - licensed victualler), Gertrude Ashber (wife), Amy Moffatt (barman assistant), Sarah Smith (barman assistant), Charles Y(f)ardell (barman assistant).

Perthshire / Re: MCLAREN from Dowally circa 1730's-1800
« on: Wednesday 23 April 08 02:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi Luv

I have a couple of McLerans from Dowally in the 1700s though later the spelling seems to change to McLaren for some of them.

John McLeran marries Hellen McLeran on 8 April 1752 in Dowally. Their children were John (b1754), Thomas (b1757), James (b1758), Grizall (b1760) and Patrick (b1762).

The McLerans lived at Over Dowally or Upper Dowally when all of these children were born. Hellen is sometimes referred to as Elan.

Our connection is through Grizall who married Andrew Finneck in Dowally on 19 Nov 1785.

I am curious as to whether there were so few families around that a McLeran had to marry another McLeran or whether the clerk just didn't know the maiden name of Hellen? I have noticed another McLeran marriage where both sides are McLeran but I'll need to check my other computer for the details of that one.

(To Scotmaid - would any of these folk be in your memorial inscriptions? I don't have any dates of death.)

Perthshire / Re: Belston, Methven and Auchtergaven

Hi Holly.

It is extremely coincidental that I just thought I would go and meander around the Perth board and then your response pops up whilst I am there.

And yes ... I have managed to find Belston, Belstane, Bellstown since my last post. In fact I have now managed to find all my obscure and wonderful little Scottish hamlets that I have been after ... maybe one day I'll get to travel to Scotland to take a look.

Belston only appears to have had about six or seven dwellings. I have tracked the Donaldson family back several generations there and yes I have noticed Patons in my travels. I am pretty sure that there is at least one Paton/Donaldson marriage maybe more but I don't have the data on this computer - will have to go and check when my son and his friend gets off the other computer (school hols here in Sydney at the moment).

The Rorie connection is that David Rorie worked as a ploughman on the Donaldson farm in Belston and then married one of the daughters - Janet Donaldson. When Thomas Donaldson, his father in law died, the Rories appear to have moved off to farm in Stirlingshire after many generations in Auchtergaven parish.

There are quite a lot of Donaldsons at Belston so I am wondering if there were perhaps more than one Donaldson family there. Unfortunately Donaldson is such a common name - and they kept naming their sons William or Thomas or Andrew so its pretty hard to tell who's who.

Thanks China. 1897 is in keeping with a mid thirties woman so it hasn't proved that this isn't Agnes. She looks about mid thirties to me (especially if she never had any children to prematurely age her).

My Jones were from Dromore (so not far off).

Francis Jones was born approx in the 1820s. He appears to have lived at different times in Ballysallagh, Ballynaris and Dromore proper. He was a weaver and labourer. His father was James Jones who was described as a labourer.

He married Mary McClatchey in Dromore in 1847. I only know of the two daughters though quite likely there were more children - Jane born in the early 1850s and Agnes born about 1862. Agnes did not marry and Jane married William Lindsay.

Hi all

I wondered if someone would have a stab at dating this photo of a relative from Northern Ireland who I can't 100% identify. I think I know who she was - Agnes Jones who lived from about 1862 to 1927 - or at least this is who I hope she is. But perhaps this isn't feasible.

I'd be interested to know when you think this was taken and how old you think the woman is. I don't have the original card but can get the details if needed.

US Lookup Requests / Re: McCormicks emigrating to US on SS Colorado
« on: Thursday 27 December 07 23:02 GMT (UK)  »
There is no death certificate in Australia. The family story is that he disappeared in a logging accident.

The only reason I have to think he was in the US first is a line of enquiry by another distant relative of my husband who found this record. And then there is the fact that there is no record of Martin entering Australia and no record of him in Australia before 1870. And then after 1875 he is gone again.

So basically this is a long shot and I just wondered if there was more info to be obtained.

The parents were listed on his marriage certificate.

I can see name, age and country of origin on the passenger manifest but I had vaguely hoped there might be more info recorded once the McCormicks entered the US.

Thanks
Kath
