United States of America / Emigrants in 1851 to New York
« on: Friday 08 September 06 03:56 BST (UK)  »
I have located a name on a passenger list for the "Southampton" arriving in New York in Oct 1851.

Now where do I start looking to see what happened to him - I cannot find his death in England, so I think he must have stayed in America.

Thank you

Thank you for your reply - this lady was a housekeeper in a private hotel in her thirties - she was a widow with a young son in the 61 and 71 census.  On the 81 census she is living/sharing accommodation  with a young policeman and his wife, who was a dressmaker.  Then on 91 and 01 census she is in the workhouse as a needlewoman - only the 01 census had the word 'shut'.  She was born in 1827.  Quite a sad tale really. Her son predeceased her along with a new born grandson.

I am quite curious as to the meaning of the word 'shut' - it was also entered next to other inmates who had needlewoman as their occupation.

Have found an ancestor in the workhouse at Marylebone in the 1891 and 1901 census.  Her occupation was described as a needlewoman and has been crossed out and the work 'shut' inserted.  What does this mean please.
