The Common Room / What colour was the uniform of a WW2 NAAFI Supervisor?
« on: Monday 19 April 21 13:24 BST (UK)  »
During WW2 my mother was a NAAFI supervisor, and looking at a photo of her in her uniform, I have realised that I don't know what colour it was. I've always assumed it was khaki, but it's a sepia photo which doesn't offer any clue to the actual colour, so it may not have been. It's too late to ask Mum, so does anyone here know? The only pictures I've found online are in black & white.

The Common Room / What are "£10 electors"?
« on: Saturday 03 April 21 15:16 BST (UK)  »
According to a newspaper article, the Electoral Roll for Elgin 1835  "...gives the names of the £10 electors of the burgh who voted after the passing of the Reform Bill, in the election of a member to Parliament, on the 24th January, 1835".

What are £10 electors, please?

Technical Help / email problem on Samsung Galaxy A50 phone
« on: Sunday 01 November 20 08:38 GMT (UK)  »
A friend who relies on my husband and me for tech. help has a problem with her Samsung Galaxy A50 phone that has us stumped. Every time she opens the email app, the various folders are empty, and her emails only appear after the phone has gone through a lengthy sync. process.  The account settings (IMAP) appear to be correct, and as recommended by Plusnet.  The ports they have told her to use differ from those our own Plusnet e-mail accounts are using, so we've tried both, to no avail.

Please can anyone suggest what has gone wrong and how to fix it?

Dunbartonshire / seeking obituary Milngavie & Bearsden Herald 1962
« on: Sunday 11 August 19 17:01 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to copies of The Milngavie and Bearsden Herald from 1962?  A Down Memory Lane feature on Sunday 12 February 2012 mentioned an obituary for Mr David Lindsay of Whitehurst, Bearsden, that appeared on the front page of the paper on February 9, 1962.  It summarised the obituary, and I would like to see the 1962 original if possible.

Buteshire / Boarding school in Rothesay 1930s?
« on: Sunday 04 August 19 10:31 BST (UK)  »
A friend's mother told her she had been a weekly boarder at a school in Rothesay in the mid-late 1930s.  However we can't find any reference to a boarding school there at that time, and are puzzled as to which school this could have been. Can anyone shed some light on this, please?

Northumberland / Can anyone find a record of this marriage?
« on: Thursday 20 September 18 12:10 BST (UK)  »
I found this newspaper announcement of a marriage, and want to find out
the bride's first name, but can't find any official record on FreeBMD or FindMyPast of a James Thompson/Thomson marrying a Jackson.  Can anyone help, please?  Maybe the marriage was not registered, or is missing from the indexes I've looked at.

"At Netherwitton, on the 22nd inst., Mr James Thompson, Rothbury, to Miss Jackson, eldest daughter of the late Joseph Jackson, Esq., of Colderife" [Newcastle Guardian and Tyne Mercury of 27th March 1852]

It's puzzling, because as far as I can tell from censuses and newspapers, the only Jacksons at Coldrife at that date were the innkeepers at the Three Half Moons, siblings whose parents were Joseph Jackson & Mary Dunn, Longhorsley. However they don't fit the information given.  Joseph Jackson, innkeeper at Coldrife d. 4 Apr 1852, and his sister Isabella (eldest daughter in their family) d aged 71 on 1 June 1869, apparently unmarried.

FH Documents and Artefacts / Badge with letters AWS
« on: Sunday 16 September 18 15:11 BST (UK)  »
I've been trying without success to identify this badge. It is 1¼" in diameter, with my late mother's maiden name engraved on the back, so probably dates from about 1930-1946.
Does anyone know what it is, please?
