The Common Room / brides and mothers with no occupation
« on: Sunday 02 March 08 21:57 GMT (UK)  »
I've got a few marriage certificates where the bride is over 21 but no occupation is given.
I would have thought that in working class families all would have had to work.
This also goes for a couple of unmarried mothers I have. One was a widow who had 3 illegitimate children befor remarrying. No occupation is mentioned on any of the birth certs or her marriage cert.

What could they have been doing???

Lancashire / Whitledge Green Ashton in Makerfield
« on: Sunday 24 February 08 11:36 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please give me any info. on Whitledge Green, Ashton in Makerfield?
Was it a "lieu dit" or a seperate part of town?

The pages referring to people living in Whitledge Green seem to be missing from the 1841 census.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / census lookup please for Kerr, Atherton
« on: Saturday 02 February 08 14:14 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find William John Kerr on the 1901 census.

He was born in 1865 in Greenock, Scotland.
He will be with his wife, Sarah, born 1872 in North Wales and his daughter, Florrie, born 1898, Atherton.
He might have his father William Kerr born 1832, Ireland, living with him.

I know they are on there but I just can't seem to see them.

Canada Lookup Request / census look up please
« on: Thursday 31 January 08 14:32 GMT (UK)  »
I'd be grateful if someone who has access to the Canadian census transcripts could have a look for a William John Kerr.
He emigrated to Canada on the 08 /08/1894 sailing from Liverpool to Montreal on the ship Lake Ontario.
He seems to have been with his wife, Barbara, although I can't find a marriage for them in England.
William John was born in 1865 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. No one has any info on them since they left England.

Also, his brother, James Kerr born 1871 in Birkenhead, Cheshire. He sailed from Liverpool on the 05/07/1906, destination, Montreal on the ship Victoria, supposedly  to join his brother.
I know that he died in Ferney, British Columbia in 1936 but between those dates, no info.

Thanks a lot.

Cheshire / Family History Society
« on: Saturday 26 January 08 11:52 GMT (UK)  »
I'm finding an ever increasing number of ancestors from Cheshire, especially from the Wirral. It's an area I don't know at all and I was really surprised to discover roots in that area.

I'm wondering if it would be helpful for me to join a local Family History Society. What do they offer?
I live abroad so wouldn't be able to take part in reunions but I'd love to find out more about that area in the 17th/18th and 19th centuries (not back to the 16th yet...).

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / John Jones and Sarah in 1891
« on: Saturday 05 January 08 15:09 GMT (UK)  »
I can't find my gtx2 grandparents, John Jones and Sarah, née payne, in 1891.

John Jones was born 1856 in Ironbridge, Shropshire. I don't know where Sarah was born. I have John in 1861 and 71 living in Shropshire and in 1881, there is one John Jones born Ironbridge living in Staffordshire,  occupation, hawker.

John and Sarah married in 1885 in Tyldesley Lancashire. John was a collier at the time. Their son, John, was born in 1888 in Wakefield, Yorkshire.

Sarah died in 1900 and so isn't on the 1901 census. In 1901, John and his son are living in Hindley, Lancashire.

I need to know where Sarah was born if I want to find her parents and so go back in time.

As John seems to have moved around a lot so he could be anywhere.
I'd be really grateful for any help in finding them.

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Birth lookup please, John Jones born Ironbridge?
« on: Saturday 15 December 07 13:28 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the birth of my gtx2 grandfather, John Jones.
On the census he gives Ironbridge as his place of birth.
He married in 1885 and on the cert. it gives his age as 30.
His parents were Henry Jones and Ann Mager.
I've looked on the FMB but am not sure which registration district Ironbridge is.
I'd have thought Madeley, but when I click on Mademey it doesn't mention Ironbridge.
As John Jones is a VERY common name I don't know which entry to choose.

I'd be really grateful for any help or suggestions.

The Common Room / What's your opinion?
« on: Friday 23 November 07 18:57 GMT (UK)  »
I've had great trouble finding my gtx2 grandmother but now realise that was because her name had changed on the various census transcriptions. The following might be a bit rambling but hope you've got a little time to read on.

She was born Ann Brown in Woolhampton Berkshire in 1829.
In Jan 1857 she married Thomas Elliott in Hamstead. This was 6 weeks after their first daughter, Eliza Ann was born and 3 months after Thomas'  first wife died of Phttisis in the workhouse in Westminster. On the death cert. she'd been ill for 3 years.
In 1861 the family, with 2nd daughter Francis Olive born 1858, are living St. James Westminster.

I then found her in 1881 in Sutton, Lancashire, wife of Alfred Jones. I found that because  I found a grandson I knew about living with her . Also,  her 2 daughters were married in Sutton.  On the marriage cert. for Ann she gives her name as Ann Elliott, widow. Nothing unusual about that (except that she was 20 years younger than Alfred)  but where was she in 1871?

On the 1881 census with Alfred and Ann Jones there's an Ann Prescott, stepdaughter, born 1870 in Newcastle. On the 1891 census she was 'daughter'. I couldn't understand who she was as Ann was still named Elliott when she married in 1875.

I found Ann Prescot wife of Paul Prescot on the 1871 census living in Sutton with daughter's Ellen Prescot born Newcastle 1866, Ann Prescott, 1870 born Newcastle and Francis Prescot born St. James Westminster 1858. Was she my Ann?

I haven't found a marriage for Paul Prescott and Ann Elliott/Brown but thanks to help from people on here I found the birth for Ann Prescott  and today I recieved the birth cert.
Annie Prescot's parents were Paul Prescott and Ann Prescott, formerly Brown. No mention of Elliott.

So, did Ann Elliott leave Thomas for Paul and follow him to Newcastle before going to Sutton where Paul was from. On the 1861 census, Paul is a soldier stationed in Devon. Were they just living together and passed themselves off as man and wife?
Then did Ann meet Alfred and marry him as by that time Thomas had died? The street address on the 1871 census is next to the addresss given on all the Elliott girl's marriage certs.

I don't think that Paul Prescot had died as there is a Paul Prescot, same age and origin living as a lodger in Eccleston, close to Sutton.

The trouble is, there are so many deaths for Thomas Elliott I don't know where to start and can't afford to order so many certs. even with reference checking.

I'm sure that Ann Brown/Elliott is Ann Prescot as on the 1901 census she has her grandaughter, Ellen Clarke, daughter of Ellen Prescot living with her.
Despite the difference in age, Ann and Alfred stayed married until Ann died aged 76.

I feel very fond of Ann but she's knocked for six all the stories my grandmother used to tell me about her family. There'd never been 'any funny goings on'. I suppose she didn't know although her mother, Eliza Ann must have.

Should I just leave it as a mystery and think that Ann Brown was a very liberated woman for her time?

Shropshire / Where is Woose?
« on: Monday 12 November 07 11:36 GMT (UK)  »
I have an Ellen Clarke aged 8 on the 1901 census living with her grandparents Alfred and Ann Jones in Tyldesley Lancashire.

Her place of birth is given as Woose Shropshire. I can't find it on my map and haven't found a birth for Ellen in Shropshire on the IGI.

Does anyone know where Woose is?
