The Common Room / Re: How reliable are certificates do you think?

I've had some weird and wonderful spellings of the name Clementson. I've also got a first name written as Jno. Any ideas on what it stands for?
All the info you give to new people like me is a great comfort and help. I'm learning all the time.  Have you got any tips on books relating life for working classes in the 19th and 20th century?
Regards,
Pat

Guy, You've cheered me up a bit. Quite a few of my ancestors were marked as "scholar" on the census and should have learned something at school but signed their marriage certificate or as informant on a death certificate with an X.
What exactly was taught in schools in the 19th century and when did schooling become obligatory?

Peter, you're great!
I'll certainly try ordering certs. from the Cheshire records office. Maybe they'll be easier to read than some of the ones from Southport.
I'm really surprised at the number of people who either had children before marriage, didn't get married or didn't bother to register the births of their children. You've given me ideas on how to look for some of my ancestors who are proving really hard to find.
I only discovered this site by pure chance but I'm really thrilled as the people on it have enabled me to open some closed doors.
Thanks again,
Pat

Thanks for finding Frances Olives death Rambler which explains her disappearance.
Eliza Elliott was 39 when she died. Your probably right about the children being registered under their mother's name but I'm not sure where to look as I have no idea what Ann's maiden name was.
On the LDS site it just says baptism; Eliza Ann, father Thomas Elliott, mother, Ann.
As you can probably make out from my messages I'm not very experienced yet in Knowing where to look for information.
Any ideas?

Thanks a lot Peter.
George Roberts was a shoe maker so that must be my Ellen. I have already ordered 3 certs. for Joseph Roberts (with ref. from ancestry), my gt grandfather but haven't got the right Joseph as the parents weren't George and Martha.
The following may seem a stupid question but I only found out a couple of weeks ago that my gt grandfather came from Cheshire, I had no idea and I know very little about Cheshire. As I live abroad I can only order certificates if I can pay by credit card. I suppose I will find Ellen on Ancestry now I know the date but Martha will be at the cheshire records office I suppose. Do you know if I can order a cert. from them and pay by c. card?

Sorry to be a nuisance and thanks again for your help.

Hi Peter,
The name of Williams came to mind as on the 1851 census, Ellen Roberts aged 11 is living with her grandparents Samuel and Martha Williams in Bromborough. As Martha's place of birth on later censuses is Bromborough it occured to me that it might be her and when I looked at neighbours on the 1841 census George and Martha were living next to them. So, I concluded that Martha was Samuels daughter.
Would Samuels marriage to Martha be on your records? On the 1851 census he's listed as being aged 67, occupation, farmer in Bromborough.

Hello Rambler,
I had seen that entry and it certainly looked like my Thomas Elliott. I sent for a death cert. for Eliza Elliott aged 10, died Westminster 7 Sep 1856 but  I was confused when I received it. It was for Eliza, wife of Thomas Elliott, groom, died 7 sept 1856. She died in the workhouse, St James Westminster cause of death phitisis 3 years certified. The informant wasn't Thomas.
So, was Eliza's husband my Thomas? If so, he was already living with Ann as their daughter Eliza Ann was born in Dec 1856. I haven't found a marriage for Thomas as I don't know Ann's maiden name.
I haven't found another death entry for Eliza daughter.
What do you think?
Regards
Pat

Can anyone help me find my Elliott ancestors?

Thomas Elliott was born circa 1821 in Cirencester Gloucestershire, Ann circa 1829 in Reading Berkshire, Eliza Ann 1856 London and Frances Olive 1858 London. Of course Thomas didn't have the good idea to register his daughters so no birth certificates.

They are on the 1861 census living in St James Westminster London where Thomas worked as a groom at the stables of the Prince of Wales. I know that they came to Lancashire to work on the Duke of Bridgewater's Estate (Thomas was a groom/coachman and Ann worked in the kitchens but I can't find any of them on the 1871 census.

I have found the marriage of Eliza to Joseph Roberts in 1875 in Prescott and after that they are on  later census returns. Thomas was deceased by then.
Frances Olive also married in Prescot in 1876 to John Alfred Rogers. After that she and John disappear.

Ann is nowhere to be found on any census after 1861.

Maybe another pair of eyes will do better than me.
Many thanks for any help in finding them.

Regards,
Pat

Cheshire / Re: Cheshire Parish Records Marriages only pre 1837 Roberts / Williams

Hello.
I'm trying to find the marriage between George Roberts born circa 1818 and Martha (maiden name possibly Williams) born circa 1818. They are on the 1841 census living in Eastham with their daughter Ellen, born circa 1840.
Thanks a lot.
