General William Booth of The Salvation Army pioneered in the mass production of red-tipped
safety matches.
In England during the 1890's matches were still being produced using phosphorous.
Many poor factory workers suffered from the fatal disease of " Phossy Jaw".
Perhaps Joseph succumbed to the disease.
