Hi Ted - I know the place you mean.  I use to hear my grandparents and parents talk about the "poor hoose" and how they never wanted to end up there.

You may find that Paisley Library can help you, or even the local paper which is called Paisley Daily Express.  Alternatively the Paisley.org.uk website has some very knowledgable people on board.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

I didn't watch the programme you mention, but what I did discover was a half hour programme with Only Men Aloud who are one of the best, if not the best male voice choirs I have come across.  The introductions were in Welsh, but that didn't matter, it was the singing I was interested in. :) :)

BUT . . . . .
There is no such place as Marton! According to GenUKI.

See what you can make of this

Yes there is a Marton on the A423 Southam to Coventry Road in Warwickshire.

Just came across a map showing S Campbell Street running off the B774.  I think it must have been next to the now demolished New Alex cinema and opposite the also demolished RAI.

If I come across an old photo I will let you know.

Xinia - I'm afraid the starving aspect still goes on, over 120 years later.  A little  7 year old girl from Birmingham  was starved to death last year by her mother and boyfriend.  She was also  subjected to horrific abuse.  The mother and boyfriend got 12 years but are now appealing for a reduction in sentence.   Cuthie

What a dreadful story.  Poor Emily.  I wonder what age she was when she was adopted and whether she lived with your g grandfather or his wife.  Six months hard labour seems pretty lenient when the death penalty was still around.   Cuthie

Hi there - why don't you try Paisley.org.co.uk   on which there are plenty of photographs of Paisley.  I know there is one of West Campbell Street but I don't know about South Campbell Street.   Cuthie

Do you have proof that he caused her death or is it just family rumours/gossip?

Well done Elwyn for your explanation which seems pretty clear.

My husband and I were born three months apart and over 300 miles apart.  His NI No. starts ZK, while mine starts ZR.  The suffix in my case is D and doesn't work out at the quarter I started work.
