The Common Room / Re: Suffolk Ag Labs move to NE mines-how did they do it?

Hope (s)he makes it. Surprised there has been no national publicity that I have seen.
Hi Redroger - there was an article on ITV news channel about this cyclist quite a few weeks ago, I think probably end July/beginning of August but can't be sure.  I did think what an arduous task on a bicycle, particularly a penny farthing.  However, I haven't noticed any other news item since the first one.

The Lighter Side / Re: The musical saw, etc.
« on: Tuesday 14 September 10 19:00 BST (UK)  »
I can remember the musical saw being played and indeed what a sweet sound it made.  I always wondered if it was a "special" saw or if any old saw would make a similar sound, or did it depend on the bow.

I don't think there are the same amounts of concert parties nowadays.  I think a lot of folk learned to play the piano, then perhaps moved on to another more portable instrument.   There are still choirs on the go who can be very enjoyable, but they don't perform like the old concert parties and in many cases are to large to go to OAP homes..

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Two photos - is this the same man?
« on: Wednesday 04 August 10 20:00 BST (UK)  »
I'm with the majority in that I think it is the same man.  The hair is obviously a lot shorter in one photo, but the shape of the hairline just below the cap badge for the Gordons is the same.  Good idea about contacting the newspaper the photo was in for any information.

The Lighter Side / Re: Heir Hunters - New Series

Yes, Lambkin I find that very greedy too.  Even if what they got was half the value, then it is money that would not have come to them if Heir Hunters hadn't investigated.

The Lighter Side / Re: whats in a name?
« on: Saturday 24 July 10 16:12 BST (UK)  »
We didn't know what sex our unborn baby was (people didn't in those days) and we had chosen a couple of names for either sex.  However, when the nurse put the baby into my arms and said we'd had a boy, the names we had chosen all seemed so unsuitable.

When I looked at the baby it seemed so clear that his name should be Gordon.  My husband was shown into the room not knowing if we'd had a boy or a girl and I told him we'd had a baby boy named Gordon.  Luckily he liked that name as I am sure I couldn't have changed it to another name

The Lighter Side / Re: Who Do You Think You Are 8 - Rupert Everett

I think it's got to be the wrong side of the blanket since Charles II had no legal heirs, hence the reason his brother James succeeded him.  Wonder if the name Rupert came from their cousin Prince Rupert.

Yes Victoria I've been watching this, and enjoying it although I must say I was puzzled about the ironing part.  When I think on the old English song "Dashing away with the Smoothing Iron" and all the different verses I don't have the impression that the iron was only used to "debug" clothes.  Also I saw an old iron up for sale described as a child's collar iron.  Must say I was surprised to hear the Mums say they never ironed, perhaps I picked that bit up wrongly.

I also take your point about scrubbing the table using salt.  I remember my Mother reguarly scrubbing with I think caustic soda, rinsing well and leaving in the sun not only to dry but to help bleach the wood.  A lemon was also used to whiten the wood.
