Could this be the Little family of Priorhill? I believe they were blacksmiths.

I have never been able to find a marriage for Robert Little (to Mary Stockdale).

Ann Stockdale in my tree came from Little Blencow, near Penrith, a long way from Bewcastle.

Give me a little time to look around and I'll get back to you.

No need to apologise - I empathise!

Sorry but I have no information or connection to James Little, Margaret Wright and family but I do have links to a Moses family and also to a James family.

Interesting. I have an Ann Stockdale b 1807 who married Joseph Lancaster.

A small selection of names from my Little research include:

Archibald m Jannet Graham 1742 Bewcastle
Archibald m Mary Armstrong 1839 Hexham
Elizabeth m  Thomas Tweddle 1858 Stapleton
Jane m John Maxwell 1835 Gretna
Matthew m Isabella Bell 1826 Arthuret
Mary m Thomas Richardson 1880 Carlisle
Richard m Jane Richardson 1865 Lanercost
Robert m Mary Routledge 1775 Bewcastle
Walter m Mary Gillespie 1861 Bewcastle
William m Elizabeth Elliott 1865 Bewcastle

Curiously I only have the above mentioned Robert and one other born 1865 Longtown.

Cumberland / LITTLE Family of Blackpool Gate Bewcastle

Andrew Little, born around 1875 Kirkandrews, was living at Blackpool gate Bewcastle working as a blacksmith. He had two daughters that I know of Margaret b 1791 and Elizabeth b 1793 both christened at Arthuret.

Kirkandrews MI states that daughter Margaret died in 1821 and wife Jane in 1849

Included in his household in 1851 are Jane Little, his grandson's wife and great granddaughters Margaret and  Isabella.

I believe the above grandson's wife Jane Little to be the wife of Andrew Little born around 1822 Bewcastle but I have been unable to find his birth or parents. I suspect he could be the son of  either Margaret or Elizabeth, father unknown.

I have a marriage cert for Jane Little born 1852, who married Thomas Richardson in the Parish church of Brampton in 1873. Father's name on the cert is Andrew Little, a husbandman.

If anyone is researching this family or indeed the family of Thomas Richardson please make contact.

Hi Janice

How is the research going?

I have just returned from Lanercost and found Archibald Sproat and Ann Jane Laidler's  headstone. I have a reasonable photo which when magnified is readable.
Inscription:

In loving memory of Archibald Sproat who died at Lanerton October 5th 1923 aged 63 years
Also  Ann Jane his wife who died January 16th 1958 aged 86 years.

I also found the headstone for William Richardson and Jane Sproat at Walton.
Inscription:

William son of the above died at The Hill Gilsland 1906 aged 53 years also William son of the above William and Jane Richardson who died at The Hill Gilsland August 1919 aged 23 years
also Jane  wife of the above who died March 7th 1940 aged 81 years.

Hi Geof

It makes sense. I did realise that it would be somewhere near the River Lyne.

I suppose children born there could be christened at either Lanercost or Bewcastle or indeed Stapleton.

Thanks for your response.

Can anyone give the precise address of Lines Farm, circa 1800's

I have noticed that some people place it in Bewcastle, Lanercost or Stapleton.

Hi Alex

I was familiar with no. 15 Westminster Street in the 1940's.

It was on a slight incline leading down to Saltwell Road. The street was made up with Terrace flats and a back lane. The road was cobbled with grey black oblong cobblestones about the size of a brick. There was a very very small garden surrounded by a brick wall (which I used to walk on as a child) which I believe belonged to the downstairs flats.
On the corner of one side of the road adjoining Saltwell Road was a sweet shop (it may have even been a newsagents but I only remember the sweets). There were a couple of other small shops on  the opposite corner of the road but my memory fails me as to what they were.

The street really was in two halves, traversed  by Rawling Road in the middle and ending at Rectory Road. Number 15 was on the right hand side going down, very near to Saltwell Road.
Hope this gives you a picture.

Hi Jorose, John  and Heather

Being a descendant of the Richardson family in the UK which includes Robert Richardson, his wife Heather Douglas and young family who sailed on the Lord Clive to Philadelphia, I have a little information which I can add to the  accurate information you have already found. I'm not sure whether it will help find where Heather's grandmother died but it is worthy of a mention.

Good Evening and best wishes for 2007

I now have reason to believe that Robert Richardson's older brother Thomas Richardson born 1850 Cumbria UK, wife Mary born 1854, son John born 1873, son Thomas Andrew born 1875, son Richard born 1877 and daughter Elizabeth (Lizzie) born 1880 also emigrated to the USA.

I believe I have found this family on 1900 US census living in Chicago, Ward 15, Cook, Illinois. The year of immigration is given as 1882

I can find no immigration records on Ancestry or Castle Garden and it does puzzle me as to why one brother would settle in Arapahoe, Colorado and the other in  Cook County. Chicago.

I appreciate the fact that the gap of 18 years could explain the different locations - perhaps someone has information that could help me.
