Hi,

I recently got a couple of photos of my mum Angela when she was a wee girl from her sister my Aunt Margo. My mum died when she was 48 and I don't have many photos of her, at least not when she was younger but I especially like the one I am attaching. Could someone please improve the quality. Also could her friend be removed from the photo if this is possible?
She was gathering snowdrops in Springwood Park in Kelso as children did for many years, myself included.

My mum is the one on the right.

Thanks

Armed Forces / Can British uniform be identified S Africa late 1800's
« on: Thursday 21 August 08 08:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I’m hoping someone can help me with this one. It concerns my gg uncle John Adam Burn son of William and Frances Burn nee Hall.

John was born  24/7/1862 in Lilliesleaf, Scotland, he is still there in the 1881 census aged 18 and working for his father as a blacksmith. Next real information I have is he died on the 3/7/1899 at Louis Trichardt South Africa. My uncle has in his possession what I can only describe as looking like a very old and very small bottle brush with an old label attached saying, 'Given to me by my brother John A Burn who died SA 3/7/1899. Egyptian rifle cleaning brush brought from the battlefield Tel-el-Kebir, J H Burn'.  James Hall Burn was indeed John’s brother. James was born 1851.

From this information I am deducing that at some point John ‘joined up’. I have looked it up and the Battle of Tel-el Kebir was 1882 (I probably have this wrong  and don’t mind being corrected). I am also assuming he must have been ‘home’ at some point to give James the brush, or of course perhaps it was posted.  I have a couple of photos of John and one of them is obviously taken in the ‘desert’ somewhere, it is of him and three others in military? uniform, on the back is written by him ‘on our camels but not a good photo,  my face is not very clear, I am the one on the left’.

I have looked for a death for him on Scotlands People thinking if he was in the army his death would be recorded here but I can‘t find anything. I don’t know anything about how that works.

I would like to find out a bit more about him, why did he go to SA, what regiment was he in, if he was there in 1882 at Tel el Kebir where would he go from there, was he still in service when he died in 1899, would his death be registered in SA, so many questions where would I go for answers? A starting point might be if someone could identify the uniform  that is being worn  by the four on the camels.

I posted the photo on the photo restoration board  to have it improved and  again the talented people there have come up trumps.  I am attaching the link, hope it works!

Hi Everyone,

This is a picture of my gg Uncle John Adam Burn. He is the one on the left. He was born in 1862 in Lilliesleaf  Scotland He was still there in 1881 working for his father as a blacksmith aged 19. Then he dies in Louis Trichardt 3/7/1899 S Africa aged 37. I think he was at the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir (I think 1882) because of further info I have.

I am trying to find out a bit more about him I would like to know what the uniform is.  I want to do a post with picture on the Armed Forces forum but feel the photo needs improving  before I do this. (Would also like a better picture for my tree).

The original photo is small and very light. I have saved as 300 but can enlarge to 600 if needed.

Hoping someone can help.

Many thanks

Terry

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Help needed with Combe/Comb E Lothian
« on: Monday 21 July 08 09:53 BST (UK)  »
Clutching at straws here and hoping someone can help, my head is buzzing with this line!
I’m posting in East Lothian because I ‘think’ it might be the right area.

An outline:  My 3g gparents were Francis Combe/Comb & Elizabeth Randell  (Rendall Rendle Randle) but usually Randell.  Elizabeth was 1st child of John Randell/Helen Dickson b Duns Berwickshire 1805,  her last known 2 siblings were b East Lothian 1813/1816.   Francis/Elizabeth had 2 sons William (mine) b 1824 and John b 1826 (ages from Census’s and deaths).  I can find no marriage for F & E, and no births for Wm & John.  I am assuming here that William may have been the name of Francis’s father as second son was John (Elizabeth’s father).
Both Wm & John’s death certs say parents were Francis C & Elizabeth Randell, Combe and then Murdoch and that Francis was Brass Finisher/Jobbing Blacksmith. Oldest son’s of both are Francis.

Elizabeth turns up on the 1841 census in Hawick Roxburghshire with Benjamin Murdoch (no marriage found) and has 2 daughters Helen (abt1831) and Matilda  (abt 1833) Murdoch plus Wm and John.  (Benjamin d Hwk 1849 Dropsy & Eliz d Hwk 1849 Cholera).
Wm & John were the only 2 Combes in Hawick and I have followed these 2 lines successfully up to present day.

Reason for posting here is Elizabeth’s family were in E Lothian, Wm states b Haddingtonshire EL and the name Francis Combe turns up again as first son of George Combe/Euphemia Cowe b 1861. I bought George’s death from SP but only gives mothers name as Elizabeth Comb. George was b 1843 so not my Elizabeth. There are two other Combs with sons called Francis being born  in the 1860’s E Lothian.

On SP  there is only 1 birth (and it’s in the correct time span) for a Francis b 1797 Cupar Fife to William Comb/Anne Dalyell. Could this  be him??? Because  I cannot find a death for Francis I really have no idea where family were pre 1841 except that Wm states b Haddingtonshire and John Midlothian.

Also Elizabeth’s sister Helen married Benjamin’s brother Joseph, they too were in Hawick in 1841 census again no marriage but I do have births of their 7 children all b Hawick.

Questions…..Did Elizabeth marry neither ‘husband’ and where can I look now?……..Where are her marriages and births of her 4 children? Benjamin and Elizabeth’s daughters were b  Hawick but unlike her sister Helen none recorded!!……..Why no records of any of these on SP surely something was recorded?………Should I post elsewhere?
Is your head buzzing now? I really would appreciate any help or contact with any other Combe/Comb researchers. Many hours have been spent on this family as I tear my hair out!!

Pleading now

Wigtownshire / Surname Broll/Brawl/Broal Wigtownshire
« on: Sunday 13 April 08 18:30 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone researching this name. My 4 g grandmother was Sarah Broll who married Andrew Hall in Inch Wigtown 6/2/1823. Sarah's death cert says her parents were John Brawl (coachman)and Janet Stewart (probably Irish). Andrew Hall was born in Ireland Sarah in Leswalt. The only other Broll I can find is a John Broll married Mary McMeiken(various spellings) I think he is Sarahs brother as second daughter is called Janet first son John. Andrew and Sarah lived all their married lives in Castle Kennedy Inch and died there. Is their any other Broll/Brawl etc out there?

Brick Wall time

Thanks Terry
