Technical Help / Phishing on family tree sites
« on: Monday 19 March 07 21:52 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to go on to some family tree (ie a link from Kimberley Powell About.com genealogy guide) and a lot of the Norton blocks it saying it thinks it is has phishing and malicious content,  I didn't think Norton was overly sensitive so I am assuming there is a reason... but could there be a risk?

Family History Beginners Board / Census Confusion
« on: Saturday 10 March 07 17:25 GMT (UK)  »
OK I found this census http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1881&indiv=try&h=6036928

so how come George Howard is a son in law when Joseph Howard is the head?  Is there something I have missed or has the census person got it wrong?

Family History Beginners Board / Glew / Glen Confusion!
« on: Wednesday 28 February 07 23:05 GMT (UK)  »
For ages I thought my great granddads surname was Glen, and it was just a transcription error on George Glen's Jr wedding certificate (found via some helpful people on another message board, rootchatters I am sure!), however having looked for his parents marriage George and Eliza Howard, I notice the surname Glew is this a transcription error again (should I say before?) or have I been researching the family tree with the wrong surname?  Bearing in mind I got Eliza's maiden name by ordering a birth certificate for George Glen.  I didn't use the full BMD registers so it could be a different couple married in 1866 Clifton Gloucestershire but it is such a striking coincidence.

Unwanted Certificates & Artefacts / Winifred Steele - Newspaper clipping
« on: Wednesday 14 February 07 13:12 GMT (UK)  »
Winifred was Dad's 2nd cousin.  I have a clipping of the local (Worcestershier) paper regarding her drowning in the Cape of Good Hope (while on a trip) gives details of her life and family.  May be of use to Tipping and Humphrey families.

Family History Beginners Board / Cousin Jack!?
« on: Saturday 10 February 07 17:01 GMT (UK)  »
I came across this expression while trying to search immigrants to a country.  The explanation given was people emigrating would ask have you a job I think mainly from Cornwall/Devon for cousin Jack.'  I have so far 700+ people in my tree/sapling the majority being from Cornwall/Devon and only one of them is called Jack as far as I know from Leeds -my uncle not blood related.  Has anyone come across this expression and is there another explanation

England / Coakes Family
« on: Sunday 04 February 07 18:07 GMT (UK)  »
??? I would like to find out more about my maternal grandfather Arthur Samuel Coakes, and as the only thing I know for certain was he married my gran Elsie May Glen I would like to do this by getting a wedding certificate.  I think they married 1934

I think mum said he died of perentinitis; if I got the death certificate would it give the cause of death; so I could have something to check it against?
