Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Missing from all Census from 1881 - 1901
« on: Tuesday 22 July 08 18:21 BST (UK)  »
Cannot find my grandfather William John Laker and his family anywhere on any Census from 1881 through to 1901.. he died aged 49 years in   September 1920 Commonwealth Road Caterham, Surrey.

William was married to Elizabeth Ann Green 1898 Bethany Hall Croydon Road Caterham Surrey.

I knew he had connections with the Salvation Army in Caterham, and was a Band Master there and founder member of the Original Citadel.

William also signed up to the Bedfordshire Regiment, and was disharged early probably due to ill health...

William John , Elizabeth Ann, children Elizabeth Fanny born 1899, and a child born to Elizabeth Ann outside of marriage but not Williams proven by birth cert, named Mary Ann Elizabeth Green born 1896, should be on the Census somewhere, but I cannot find them anywhere.

4 other  children were born after the 1901 Census, and a possible further son William John Laker birth year unknown.Referred to as the oldest though.

Can anyone suggest where I could look now..

thanks
dottie

quick update have managed to make contact with a cousin in Warlingham, who informs me that Theodora Creeper died in the early 1930's and is buried at All Saints church in Warlingham. But her husband Henry John smith re-married to someone called Eileen (no surname yet)...

Best bit of all Henry John's actual surname was GOLBY, he changed it to Smith so that he could join up for the 1st World War, confused so am I ::) :o

plenty of research to do here

thank you Newfy, amazing site so informative, this should certainly help me in my research... :)

Indeed !

If you suspect the Croydon District - try phoning or emailing the Local Registry Office - oh and that Church you mentioned where hubby is buried, wont they have records ?

newfy I'll try this and post here again if I can find out anything new, although I know the Croydon Cemetary will want death date as well. Ummmmmm, had this problem trying to find my mum after 50 years (theodoras daughter), but success came to me finally, hopefully ths will too :)

the closest I came to her death index cert. was a theodora k. smith died Alton which was definetely the incorrect one as she was down as a spinster, which I know for sure she was not - um a poser this is ::)
