Worcestershire / An isolated record.
« on: Friday 22 June 12 08:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I have in my files, a single, isolated record for an apparent ancestor and I need further information to

confirm that he did, in fact, exist.

An IGI entry shows a Christening for Edward Mammett (usually spelt with an "a" and not an "e") with the following details:

Birth:  Stockford
Christening:  22 May 1825 Yardley, Worcester, England
Parents
        Father: Edward Mammett
        Mother: Amelia Mammett

Whilst I'm comfortable with these details, I feel I need something further to establish a place for him in the Family Tree. There were three other children, all of whom I feel are adequately accounted for.

Can anyone help me to add something further to this isolated record, please?

Derbyshire / Problem Using 1911 Census Address Search
« on: Sunday 27 May 12 12:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

One of my ancestors and his family were living in Devonshire House, Mellor Road , Mellor at 1901 Census date, but by 1911 Census time , they had moved elsewhere. I am trying to find out who occupied this house at 1911 Census date (and also between 1901 and 1911 if at all possible).

Devonshire House is still there , the present-day address being 32 Longhurst Lane, Mellor.

The 1911 Census Address Search facility in FindMyPast throws up Longhurst Lane, Mellor but despite many attempts in all sorts of ways to locate Devonshire House  (I don't think there were house numbers at that time), I've had no luck.Had I found it, of course, I would have been able to identify the occupants.

Can anybody help with this one please?

Hello,

Can anyone tell me, please, whether the address given in the Burial Records at Southern Cemetery
is the address where the deceased person died or where they lived (often the same, but not always) or the address of the Informant.

Lancashire / Help with Union Workhouse Information.
« on: Wednesday 23 May 12 02:40 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
The Death Certificate for Joseph Mammatt gives his place of death as "Union Workhouse - U D" and the informant as A G Hull, Matron, Union Workhouse. The death was registered in 1905 in the District of Stockport, the Sub-district of Stockport First, in the County of Stockport.
Can anyone please tell me where, in Manchester, this workhouse was located and whether there are any "patient" records available.

Can anyone please help with information about the "HatherlowBritish School" around the 1897 period. My grandfather apparently sent his children to this school prior to registering them at the New Mills School in 1898.

Lancashire / What was happening in Hollyhurst Road in 1891?
« on: Saturday 28 April 12 06:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello Everybody,

The 1891 Census found one of my ancestors at "Vauxhall Street, Manchester" - he was a "General Warehouseman" at that time.

There is a present-day "Vauxhall Street", a short street apparently unoccupied and unused, that comes off Collyhurst Road in an area to the north of Manchester CBD. This seems to be a large, open area typical of a former heavy industrial site such as cotton mill, paper mill, heavy engineering. I notice a waterway nearby, also.

I wonder if anyone has any knowledge of the history of activity in this area. There are certainly no houses in or close to Vauxhall Street now, I don't think, but that doesn't necessarily mean there weren't any back in 1890. Would appreciate any bits of information.

Chanel.
