Offaly (Kings) / Ancestor was Lieut. in King's Co. Militia, 1809. what next?
« on: Saturday 15 August 09 21:43 BST (UK)  »
Surprisingly I found an ancestor who was a Lieut (Adjutant) in the King's County Militia.  He's listed in a book as "Officers in the Kings Co Militia in 1809"

Lieutenant Richard McLain

I also found him in the 1802 Census of Protestants of the Diocese of Meath living in Tullamore, Kilbride

M'Clain, Richard, Mary, George (age 3)

Can anyone tell me how to go about finding a service record? pay list? muster rolls? for this regiment or anything else that would be included?
I'm guessing I'd have to go through the UK's national archives for anything.

Thank you!

Ireland / How do I obtain Church of Ireland parish registers?
« on: Saturday 23 May 09 16:46 BST (UK)  »
Are there copies of microfilms available for mail order or should I consult a professional genealogist to go to the Representative Church body library?
I am looking for Tullamore Kilbride, my family was in Clara, Kilbride by the 1820s but its worth looking through Tullamore since they may have been there earlier, c. 1800.

Ireland / Help with Tithe Applotment Books
« on: Thursday 16 April 09 19:21 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to understand my ancestor's tithe applotment record.  Some examples of the books I found have the land rated, and I understand the quantity of land, but not how to tell what was good quality. The record for my ancestor's parish has the following...

Clara, Kilbride Parish, King's Co.

Henry McClain,   Quantity: 2 rods

Marquess' Rate per acre: 1... 6 1/2  , then says 9 1/2 pence
Vicar's Rate per acre:  1... 3 1/2,  then says 8 pence

Total Money in Irish:  1 shilling 5 1/2 pence
Total Money in British:  1 shilling 4 1/4 pence

Second entry is:

Clara Town, Fair Green Street
Henry McClain and Anthony Dulhunty
Quantity: houses each, and yard.

Marquess Rate : 6 1/2 pence
Vicar's Rate:  6 1/2 pence

Total Money in Irish: 1 shilling, 1 pence
Total in British: 1 shilling

I believe, by Marquess, it would be Marquess of Downshire?

Any help is appreciated, Thank you!

Offaly (Kings) / Clara, Kilbride Tithe Applotment - 1826- Will lookup
« on: Wednesday 15 April 09 14:58 BST (UK)  »
I obtained a large part of the Kilbride parish tithe applotment records for Clara townland, its about 200 plots of land with occupiers' names.
I would have loved to make copies of the originals but the microfilm copy machine wasn't working so I wrote everything down on paper and will use it like a census for Clara.  Anyone looking for someone in this area, I have their name, property, and quantity of land.

Offaly (Kings) / Kilbride Cemetery, Kilbride Parish
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 16:39 GMT (UK)  »
Would anyone know how to contact a representative of Kilbride Cemetery in/around Kilbride parish near Clara?

The parish records for my family were destroyed. I found one death in 1864 Civil Registration before they emigrated.
If I can find any info on the burial plot which is most likely this cemetery, I can hopefully find other ancestors or more information. My ancestors were of the Church of Ireland parish in Clara. I was in contact with a Rev. from St. Brigid's CofI church and he told me he had no records of this burial in the small church graveyard.

The burial I am in search of is my gr-gr-gr-gr grandfather

Deaths Registered in the District of Clara in the Union of Tullamore, in the County of King's

Nov. 6, 1864 Henry McLain,  Married, age 70 years
Occupation: House Painter
Cause of death: (illegible)
Son Henry McLain present at death, Registered 11/9/1864

My earliest records of the family in Clara was in the tithe applotment books.  After that I have only Griffith's Valuation, then 3 civil records between 1864-66 before emigration.  I'll be venturing into cancelled land records to see if any unknown family stayed behind, but if nothing turns up from that or my search for Henry McLain's burial, I'm afraid i've gone as far as possible.

Thanks to anyone with any information,

Chris Beal

Ireland / Cancelled Land Records-- How to?
« on: Thursday 22 January 09 13:39 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know how to go about searching through cancelled irish land records with info from Griffith's Valuation?
My family was from Clara (Kilbride Church of Ireland parish) and all church records are lost.  I have them in tithe applotments, griffiths, and they were there for only 2 years after civil registration started, they emigrated to NYC in 1866.

I'd like to try to use the land records as a census substitute to see if I can find if it was left in the hands of relatives upon death/emigration so maybe I can find some clues.

Would the land records be LDS microfilms or are they only available through Ireland's archives?
