US Resources & Offers / Connecticut birth, marriage and death indexes
« on: Tuesday 29 December 15 22:02 GMT (UK)  »
The Connecticut State library now has marriage and death indexes covering 1897-1965 online. http://libguides.ctstatelibrary.org/hg/indexes  I was also happy to recently discover that there is a divorce tab that brings you to some indexes for divorces in different counties.  You have to go through opening PDF's page by page in alphabetical order, but I made two good finds for myself.

United States of America / Jessie Nicoll
« on: Monday 16 November 15 17:59 GMT (UK)  »
I have a sister of my great-grandfather that I haven't found.

Jessie Nicoll was born 28 Dec 1893 in Dundee, Scotland to John Nicoll (1860-1902) and Margaret Buist (1856-1917).  She arrived in the US in 1909, resided with family members in Andover, Mass until 1920, when the city directory said "rem from town".

This appears to be her in the 1920 census with her brother Andrew in Minnesota - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MW1Q-BPD  Andrew appeared to use the spelling Nicol instead of Nicoll.  There is a boy below Jessie that is listed as a grandson, but Andrew didn't seem to have any children of childbearing age, so I wonder if it was really Jessie's son.

I couldn't find her in 1930, but there are entries for Jessie Nicoll in the 1936 & 1939 St. Paul city directories that may or may not be her.

There was an entry in the SSDI for a Jessie Blake with the same birthday, but the Mass. death index had her born in Massachusetts, so it may be someone else.

I have found most of the rest of the family.  Her brothers David & George died in 1917 & 1919 respectively.  There is a sister listed as Mrs. James Anderson of Scotland in David's obit, but I have never figured out her first name.  Jessie was listed as living in Andover, Mass. in David's obit.

Her brother Thomas died in Carnoustie, Scotland in 1958.  Brother Andrew died 7 Feb 1978 in Minnesota, but his obit didn't mention her.  Brother John died 2 Sep 1955 in Los Angeles.  Brother William died 27 Feb. 1966 in Augusta, Maine.

I never found anything further that was revealing about her or the possible son in the 1920 census, so I need another set of eyes.  Thanks!

I thought this organization might be of interest to people researching in the US.

We’re a not-for-profit group of genealogists, historians, researchers, and open government advocates who are filing Freedom of Information requests to get public data released back into the public domain. We’re collecting information about archivally important data sets that are not available online or on publicly available microfilm, and we’re using Freedom of Information laws and Open Data initiatives to get copies of this information released back to the public.

We’re planning a series of requests for data under state Freedom of Information Laws, starting with New York City, New York State, and New Jersey archives and libraries. We started with one pilot project in 2015, and will be launching three more in early 2016.

Their newsletter, which can be seen here - http://us11.campaign-archive2.com/?u=5f700fdc65a51d3813e67dab2&id=6a1be2dc76 - says they were successful in their first case trying to get the more detailed marriage license application for the NYC Municipal Archives.

Hopefully, these efforts will give greater and easier access to helpful records.

The Lighter Side / A great obituary

An article about a woman who wrote her own obituary:  https://gma.yahoo.com/self-written-obituary-mom-lost-cancer-battle-melt-191800016--abc-news-wellness.html

Here's a link to the actual obituary:

Don't we all wish we could get that much detail in an obit?  She sounds like quite a lady.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Passenger list help
« on: Tuesday 28 October 14 13:11 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to read the entries in the passenger list for Matens Kulboka:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JXKG-1M6

I can't make much out as far as his last residence, his mother's name/location, the name of the cousin he was going to join in Bridgeport, Connecticut on the 2nd page, and place of birth.

Information from a family member suggests his mother's name was Agnes, but I'm not sure if that's close to what's on the passenger list.  His naturalization records says he was born Rudai, Russia/Lithuania, but again that doesn't look like the info on the passenger list.
