United States of America / Donohues of Newburgh, New York
« on: Tuesday 14 October 14 21:03 BST (UK)  »
I think I need other eyes on this brick wall.  Keep in mind that the surname has shown up as Donohue, Donahue, Donohoe, Donoghue, and probably a few others that I'm forgetting.   ;)

I first have Patrick (b. abt. 1830 in Ireland) & Bridget (b. abt. 1832 in Ireland) Donohue in the 1860 census with daughters Mary & Christina.  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MCQ1-KZP

1870 with sons Patrick, James, and Michael - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M8VJ-8KX

Possible match in 1872 Orange County directory - Donehue, Patrick, farm 20 acres, P O Blooming Grove

This seems to be them in 1875, although Patrick aged very rapidly - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VTDF-FQ9

There are possible matches for Patrick in Newburgh city directories from 1878-1901.

I found daughter Mary working as a servant in the 1880 census, and Patrick seemed to be listed on a non-population schedule for agriculture in Newburgh in 1880, but I didn't see the whole family.

This seems to be Patrick & Bridget with son James in 1900 with Patrick still being older than he originally was - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MSL7-DZD

In 1910, Bridget appears to be a widow & living with son Patrick - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MP1L-K1D

I'm hoping to find (1)  death dates for Patrick & Bridget.  Attempts at death index look-ups haven't been successful.  The only possible death for Bridget to be found was 29 Nov. 1914 in Big Indian, Ulster Co., and I'm not convinced enough that it's her to order the death certificate.  She's not with her son in the 1915 NY state census, so I'm inclined to think she died before then.

(2)  Bridget's maiden name.  I have a lot on daughter Mary, who married Adrian Kissam abt. 1882 and died in 1927, and her family going forward.  Unfortunately, Mary's death certificate did not give Bridget's maiden name.  Son Patrick died in 1950 per Find a Grave, but I don't know if the family would remember her maiden name in 1950 if they didn't in 1927.

(3)  What happened to their other children.  I don't have any definite matches for Michael beyond 1870 or James beyond 1900.  A family tree I found has Christina married to a Thomas Murray, but there didn't seem to be much detail to support it.  If her husband was Thomas, I found a possible death notice in Aug. 1903 - http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=saJhAAAAIBAJ&sjid=Sy8NAAAAIBAJ&dq=thomas-murray%20newburgh%20farmer&pg=2187%2C1454759.  The 1936 Newburgh city directory has Christina Murray, widow of Thomas, but 1937 doesn't have her, so maybe she died around then.

Also, if anyone can find them in the 1880 census, that would be great, but I suspect they were missed.

United States of America / What happened to Honor Murphy?
« on: Thursday 13 June 13 17:39 BST (UK)  »
I have a lost person that I haven't been able to find.  She is referenced on this previous thread:  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,261718.0.html

Honor Murphy was born 4 Feb. 1868 in Billypark Cross, Co. Mayo, Ireland to Walter Murphy and Mary Killelea.  She sailed to the US on the Adriatric arriving 29 Aug 1926 and was going to join aunt Mary Farren in Wilmington, Delaware.  Mary Farren was the daughter of John Quinn & Bridget Killelea (who I assume was related to Honor's mother Mary Killelea, but I'm not sure how.)  Mary's siblings are mentioned on the other thread, and the obituary for Mary's brother Martin doesn't mention Honor.

I haven't found anything further on Honor after the passenger list.  The manifest seems to indicate that she was staying permanently, and I didn't find a return passenger list.  Honor's brother William was in the US in Westchester County, New York from the 1890's until his death in 1953.  William's obituary did not mention Honor.  I think all the other Murphy siblings remained in Ireland.

US Lookup Requests / Lookup on a free site?
« on: Saturday 23 January 10 21:24 GMT (UK)  »
I'm having a bit of a problem, and I think it's because the item I'm trying to see is too large and/or my computer is too slow.

Google is showing a result on archive.org called "Real Estate record and builders' guide" that has references to Walter T. Mills, Frank J. Mills, and Oscar C. and Westchester Mills.  Every time I click on the link, it starts to come up but my computer grinds to a halt.  Can anyone see it?

US Completed Requests / NY Times article from 1945
« on: Saturday 22 August 09 15:07 BST (UK)  »
I wanted to see if anyone had access to the full article from 21 Jan. 1945 entitled "Latest War Casualties From the Three-State Metropolitan Area; Wounded European Area NEW YORK".  A search shows "Pvt. ALBERT: Mrs. Madeline Fagan, 10 Parker St. Port Chester" and I wanted to see if there was any further detail on him in there.  I suspect there isn't, but I thought it might be worth checking.

Interesting article in the New York Times about a luncheon given by the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation:  http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/24/nyregion/24records.html  It has links to ship manifests, a census record, and a draft registration card of Jerry Seinfeld's ancestors.

United States of America / My brickwalls for death dates
« on: Monday 21 July 08 17:47 BST (UK)  »
I have a few people for whom I haven't been able to find a date of death.  Perhaps someone can help me find them or narrow it down.

1)  Leroy David Sherwood, also known as Roy
Per his WWI Draft Registration Card, he was born 16 May 1883.
I have him in Bridgeport, CT with his mother and siblings in the 1900 and 1910 Census.
I found a possible marriage record for him on Italiangen.org for 25 Nov 1914 in Brooklyn to his wife Freda Mohr.
He's in Brooklyn as of the WWI Draft Registration.
He appears to be in Scranton, Pennsylvania with his wife & 2 children in 1920.
They are in Harrison, New York in 1930.
I have his wife's obituary from 1973 and he was deceased by then.  In her obituary, it mentions that she lived in Port Chester, NY for more than 25 years.

2)  Frederick Cowperthwaite, born Keswick England in 1865 and likely immigrated in 1888 (I have a possible passenger list.)
He was in Rye, New York in 1900.  (Strangely transcribed by Ancestry as Iren Coperworth.)
He was in Port Chester, New York in 1910.
I found him in Port Chester city directories in 1918 (in East Port Chester) and 1920 (in Port Chester).
In the 1920 Census, his wife is in Port Chester and listed as married, but Frederick isn't listed.
In the 1928 East Port Chester directory, Frederick's wife and 2 adult sons are listed, but he isn't.
In the 1934-35 East Port Chester directory, his wife is listed as (wid Fred), so he was deceased by then.  I'm not sure if he left the family or when he died.

3)  Frederick Cowperthwaite's wife Margaret (maiden name possibly O'Brien), born Ireland circa 1870, possibly immigrated to Boston 1885-1888.
Frederick & Margaret married about 1892, per census records, but I don't know where.
I have Margaret in the 1937-1938 directory of East Port Chester, but nothing thereafter.  I have her son John's obituary from 1953 and her son Joseph's obituary from 1964 and there's no mention of her in either, so I'm thinking she was deceased by then.

Any further info would be helpful.
