Can anyone tell me...

*Why most posts have a little blue oval with the word "new" after the subject line?... I notice mine don't.

*what  the thumbs-down icon means (second column where mostly there is a symbol for "document"? Likewise for the question mark with a circle around it?

Also what is a "pioneer", and "extra" etc. signify?

I tried to find the info somewhere but haven't been able to.

Thanks,
ard

Completed Census Requests / 1871 yorkshire census

Hello Linda,

I am wondering if my gg grandfather was in Yorkshire in 1871. Although he was originally from Germany, he married in Yorkshire (Sculcoats) in 1872.
His name was Ludwig Hoffman(n), born around 1834, a bricklayer at the time of his marriage to my gg grandmother.
He was a widower at that time.
Come to think of it my gg grandmother may have been in Yorkshire too. Her name was Thirza Burton, b.1844 in Lincolnshire.

Much thanks for your kind offer,
ard

HALSTEAD...
Hello Adrian,
At least one line of mine seems to be of Halstead, those with the surname SMITH.
The furthest I can go back with dates are:
Thomas SMITH who married Mary Ann BAKER 18-Jul-1811, in Halstead.

I do not have the family of Mary Ann BAKER.

Thomas was the son of James SMITH and Ann ????. I have two sibblings noted: Abigail and Alice. I don't know when any of them were born, when James was married, what Ann's last name was, or how long the SMITHs go back in Halstead.

I am also a little unsure of the marriage of another Thomas SMITH who married Susan (Everitt? from ??) in 1821 in Halstead.

Also a Henry SMITH who married  Emma (Willings? from ??) in 1863, Halstead.

Are you able to help me with any of those questions with the parish records you have???

MUCH THANKS for your kind look-up offer!

sincerely,
ard

Hello,
Would you have listed the marriage of a John TOMLIN of Hastings to a Harriet (Woolven?), somewhere in the last half of the 1820s?

Also of another earlier John TOMLIN who married ?? sometime before 1778...

(I do have the John TOMLIN in between who married Mary DAVIS in 1800, Hastings!

Much thanks!!

A broad request! I'm trying to track two ancestors, the parents of my great grandfather George NEALE.
Has anyone access to the censuses of 1841 or 1851 for the general Middlesex area? These are who I'm looking for.

Henry NEALE.
He was born 1821-22 in Shoreditch.
He would have been 19 in 1841; 29 in 1851.
He was found in the 1871-81-91 censuses of Bethnal Green. Where he was in 1841 and 1851, I don't know but my guess is somewhere in Middlesex. He was not found in the 1851 Bethnal Green census.
His occupations in 1871-81-91 were listed as shoe maker, sadler and boot mender, so it would appear he worked with leather.

Elizabeth RICKETTS
A little trickier. She was born in Bethnal Green between 1832 and 1836 (census discrepencies).
In 1841 she could have been between 5 and 9 years old. In 1851 between 15 and 19.
In 1871 she was listed as a book folder.

Part of the intrigue is this: My great Grandfather was born in 1871. His parents, in the 1871 census, were in a house with more than one "household". One household has Henry NEALE as head, unmarried, 49, shoe maker. Included in his "household" is Elizabeth RICKETTS, 36, (the relation to head is: "no") unmarried, book folder.

"No" relation to head doesn't give much of a clue as to what she was doing there (living or visiting). But they are the parents of my great grandfather, living at 7 Grove st. in Bethnal Green, where he was born.

In 1881 they appear to be together, husband and wife. If Betsy NEALE is in fact formerly Elizabeth RICKETTS, her year of birth is slightly earlier. Whether they in fact were formally married, I don't know.

Oddly, we find Henry NEALE in 1891 living without family and marked as "unmarried". I believe Elizabeth had died by then and George was living elsewhere. Of course, censuses don't tell all, and the information could have been erroneously given by someone else but still... it isn't a typical progression of information I'd expect to find. Coupled with the fact that George left England for Quebec, Canada and apparently did not like to  speak of his past (and that the stories he did tell weren't consistant) makes it alll the more interesting!

Any tips, suggestions or other information would be likewise appreciated!

Cheers,
ard

Completed Census Requests / Re: 1851 census Bethnal Green

Thank you Sylviaann for looking :0} You know, a "negative" can be as helpful as a "positive"... at least it can give you an idea where someone wasn't!

And it's a start anyway. I have a feeling these two may have moved around quite a bit and, by the various censuses, seemed mostly to to have lived in houses with more than one "household".  An interesting glimpse of the people and the times.

cheers,

Completed Census Requests / 1851 census Bethnal Green

I have two names, that I am hoping to find more information on:

Henry NEALE
(born around 1821-22 in Shoreditch.) From 1871 on he was in Bethnal Green, so perhaps he was also there in 1851 when he was about 29 yrs old. In the 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses, his occupations involved leather: shoe maker, saddler, boot repairer.

Elizabeth RICKETTS,
born between 1832-1836 in Bethnal Green (census age discrepencies!) She would have been between 15 and 18 years old in 1851. In 1871 she was listed as a "book folder".

If anyone might have information on these two people, I'd be most grateful.

I'm also interested in 1841 census information on the two above mentioned people.

THANK YOU.
