Have had a message from the Ancy tree holder, who will check why she made the link - not sure at this stage.

Another interesting development is the discovery of a large NAA ASIO file for "Hilda" Fornachon, covering the period 1939-1962. Hilda is a frequent misspelling of Huldah's name. The file seems to be part of a series dealing with the Communist Party of Australia. I assume it might also have some useful references to her husband, but at an estimated cost of over $200, I'm reluctant to invest in it. Especially as it's labelled "Open, with exception" and a list of references for restrictions. It would probably come with lots of black redaction markings.

Don't know why this hasn't shown up in many previous searches, but there is a tree on AncY which contains this Alan Le Vere as a brother to a woman who is also a bit elusive to trace. She is Lillian Marion Levere, aged 26 on her Dec 1926 Victorian marriage cert, with parents Henry Levere and Annette Wilkins. On her 1965 Vic death cert she is Marie Lillian McEwan, with parents unknown. In the tree, the only link I can see is that Alan's father is Alwyn (as stated on his death cert), and that Marie/Lillian named her Oct 1926 born son Alwyn. I have messaged the tree owner to ask about any further evidence.

With a full stop before Vere, it could be an initial in the middle - Miss G.C.Vere?

Yes Sue, I did notice the 1910 year and had the same thought about his lapse of memory  ;D

The Jack Levere/Leppard issue is interesting. I have always wondered why Alan was in Australia in the first place. His occupation of "journalist" doesn't seem to have been a very prominent one, but perhaps there was a family link. Hmmm.....

After checking what information should be included, I have decided to bite the bullet and ordered the QLD death certificate. It should contain his marriage details, birthplace, and both parents' names.

I'm not particularly optimistic, knowing these details are provided by surviving family members whose knowledge depends on what they have been told, and how accurate that is. I just hope there are not too many "unknowns" or wild guesses, as I have found in the past.

An emailed option was not available, so it make take 10 days or so to arrive. I will let you know what eventuates. Thank you again for your interest and help.

Unfortunately I do not even know where Alan was married, nor how he came to meet his wife, who was South Australian. They lived for some time after the war in South Australia, where they had a daughter, before moving to Queensland and dying there. There is no readily available South Australian marriage index for the year 1942. Can't find it in NSW either.

However, Queensland BDM index, with his death date of 15 March 1988, repeats his birth year of 1911 and states that his father's name was Alwyn Levere. I'm having the same difficulty in finding anyone of that name who might be Alan's father.

In a brief contact with his daughter, who has some interest in family history, she mentioned that she has been unable to find anything of her father before 1940. She has not replied to further contacts, so I don't know if she has had any help with marriage details.

I wonder about his name, and whether it might be an alias, but then why bother or worry about draft requirements if the US government can't trace you anyway? As far as the Australian government knows, he is English.

The mere existence of the draft card is a puzzle.
